On Friday nights evening stroll, Verity and I came across a lady on the side of the road standing next to a female mallard and her 5 chicks, trying to stop them from wandering into the path of cars. We were all confused as to how they got into a residential area and why the mother didn't want to seem to leave that spot. Then we heard some splashing sounds coming from down the drain. At first we thought there was one duckling down there, then two, then three. When I pulled the drain off we could count 5. With no fishing net, It was up to me to try and fish the ducklings out myself. But as well as the water being quite far down, it was horrible. Stagnant sewage water with a green bag of dog shit floating in it. My brain told me not to shove my head and hands in there, but with the moral support of Verity and some of the local residents, I persevered. All 5 of the shivering and slightly dazed ducklings rejoined their mother and their five other siblings and as far as we know they were put in a box and taken to Sutton Park where hopefully they'll live a happy life on one of the lakes.
