The Aliens exist in non linear time. Thats why their language is in a circle while our lives are linear we live from begining to end they live everything at once. like the 4th dimension being time. we live in the 3rd dimension we have time but we cant control it. if you live in 4 dimensions youc an control time within your lifespan which is why they just disapeared when they left. so the tool allowed her to control time so she started experiences time in a circle so to us she could see the future.

He said no. But then later (in the future she had seen) he got mad bc she hadn’t told him. It seems to me that I saw this movie years ago but didn’t watch it completely. Great movie! I did mention earlier about problems with the video, and I see there are some more people having issues. I’ve just been watching on Patreon. Keeping my app updated. 👍🏼

2025-03-25 08:42:55 +0000 UTCBasically, after Louise figures out how to read the language she can see events in her future. Hannah is her daughter from the future that she has with Ian. Louise had Hannah without telling Ian that she was going to eventually die as a teenager from the disease so that's why Ian gets upset and divorces Louise. He is mad that he didn't have input on having a child that he knew was going to die. That's why Hannah says her dad doesn't look at her the same, because he knows she dies young. Still not clear on how Earth will save the aliens in 3,000 years but I believe the aliens knew that we would destroy each other if all the countries couldn't come together peacefully.

It makes me wonder if it was a single predestined, unchangeable timeline, which means that she was always going to have her no matter what, and she was always going to meet the aliens and gain foreknowledge. The single timeline theory means that knowledge of the future is part of creating the future and the future cannot be changed.

The alien language Louise learns allows her to perceive time non-linearly, meaning she’s seeing future events as if they already happened. The little girl she keeps seeing IS NOT a memory of her past daughter, but a glimpse of the daughter she will have in the future with Ian. The more Louise learns the language the better she become as at perceiving her life all at once. Before the aliens arrived she wasn't married nor did she have a child yet. Those clips of her with a kid that eventually dies at the very start of the film hadn't happened yet, that was the future. Ian left Louise and his daughter because Louise decided to marry him and have a child with him even though she knew their daughter would die young. These are the facts. The message regarding language may be left up to interpretation but there was only one kid who is Hannah and one husband that is Ian. That's why we were never shown the father till the end of the film.

I knew you knew it… but also yeah it’s a crazy theory so I get why you held back a bit! When I show this to my students in Linguistics class I’m always glancing at their faces to see who figures it out and when. It’s an amazing experience!

Miners used to bring down canaries, as when there's a pocket of toxic gases in the mine the canary dies first , alerting the miners. So the bird here is meant to warn them if oxygen depletes dangerously or toxic gases are present.

Outro: Asia don’t doubt yourself, BJ didn’t get it. All of those visions of the kid are her and Ian’s kid Hannah who is born in the future. Louise understands non-linear language and that rewired her brain so she could think in a way where there is no past/present/future. That’s why she could see the future of their child Hannah. Ian left her because eventually Louise spilled the beans and told Ian that their daughter was going to die of a rare disease. Asia your instincts are right. 💯

The premise of this film is based on a theory called Linguistic Determinism or the “strong” Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which most linguists reject in HUMAN language but it makes for one hell of a film, perfect for something with aliens!
