2025-07-28 08:06:35 +0000 UTCThis is my first re-watch since it came out. I remember thinking it was a Weeds rip-off with Ruth being fantastic, and Wendy being unbearable. Revisiting Wendy is still unbearable, but I guess it was best for the story? Wish she could've had a better underlying personal trait to attach to. Fresh off The Wire re-watch, Mel had some real McNulty to him. Questionable character, undeniable police work. Sticking with The Wire, I thought Omar was a top 5 character for me, but it's hard to say he's better than Ruth mf Langmore. She had the walk, she had the talk - language and accent, a certain set of principles and she stands on business. Unlike most TV, she has more of a Samuel L in a Tarantino flick quotable catalogue. "I don't know shit about fuck." - Ruth. She's an all timer and the classic hip hop arch in season 4 is the chef's kiss. No notes. As far a shows go, the cliffhanger structure with relentless escalation, pressure, anticipation and absurdity works best because it's stops after 4 seasons. Sure S4 is crazy, but the show gets crazier every episode. Pedal to the medal, reach max speed, then quit. Never gets boring, always moves forward. This same material would be at least 6 seasons in a show nowadays. Really cool camera work in the final episode. The drone 270-360 degree shot around The Belle during the party. But then the continual shot of Ruth's hallucination of her family, going up on the roof to talk to Wyatt. The shot of the series, felt more like a movie than a tv show. From behind showing her and Wyatt, spinning view to show only her and Three as he reaches the top of the ladder, then continues to turn to include all three of them only to finally return to the frontal and it's only Ruth and Three again. A+, 10 out of 10 scene. Great show, perfect for a watch-along format. Fun and crazy. I should probably watch Weeds again.

If you want a funny Jason Bateman movie to watch I recommend Game Night or Identity Thief. As for tv series, I recommend The Handmaids Tale and Queen of the South (I believe Camilla is also in this show). Love y’all!

2025-01-28 17:47:04 +0000 UTCLastly, the uncomfortable fact is that the deaths of Ben, Wyatt, and Ruth were consequences of their own actions, not the Byrds. Wendy goes out of her way to attempt to save Ben, begs him to leave, and even tries to facilitate his escape. And he just ignored her and became a total liability in the end. Wyatt was given a chance after chance to have a better life and leave Darlene; he was told he would be killed if he stayed. And he chose to ignore that, despite every red flag. The Byrds begged Ruth not to kill Javi and warned them what would happen to her if she did, and once again, she chose otherwise. The Byrds knew who they were up against and should have been listened to.

I’m not sure it has sunk in yet, but Ruth was going to be running the casino, so now that she’s gone the Byrds will have to stay. They may never get free of this life. I think the car accident scene was extremely important too because for a small minute it seemed entirely possible that Wendy might have died. It made the kids realize how much they really did love their mom, even though she was a flawed character. I wish Ruth had recorded her conversation with Nathan and played it for them.

Asia and BJ remind me of watching TV with my aunt and uncle when I was a kid. They react just like them. Lol. Dude, Three was the only Langmore to survive! He's gonna need lifelong therapy 😥. I'm glad Sam sorta had a happy ending. He was just oblivious to all the evil surrounding him. Like a dog or something. My favorite characters were Buddy, Rachel and Jim (the guy who helped Wendy). The worst person definitely was Wendy though, by the end. What a total B!

I could write an entire essay but I'll just say this: Remember in season 1 when Jonah was talking about the Starlings? They’re an invasive bird species that destroys the ecosystem. we’ve always known the Byrdes (birds) are metaphors for the Starlings, but it doesn’t really hit you till you finish the series, just how destructive they were in the Ozarks. All the lives they ruined, the people who died along the way, and in the end, the Byrde’s are the one’s left standing. I’ll leave it at that. Peace y’all!

I binged the whole thing in a weekend a few years ago and all I remembered was that there is cartel money laundering, a teenager hooks up with an old lady, Darlene kills Jacob, Ruth dies in the end, and Jonah kills someone. That’s literally it. So glad to pace it out on this watch along with you two!

If Wendy had died instead of Ruth, it could have highlighted the dangers of unchecked ambition and provided Ruth a chance for redemption. Although I was disappointed in the finale for this reason, I still found the show to be fantastic over its four seasons!
