This is a great movie, And Asia I haven't been able the same since I watched "IT" either - that scared the crap out of me as a kid and i've never recovered LOL! Don't watch thrillers with your feet down :)

I love Sean Penn. This movie is one of my favorites with him. 2 other movies that I love him in is Dead Man Walking, and a very young Sean Penn in At Close Range

Clint Eastwood is a master director and storyteller. He has said he never makes movies the Hollywood way, all wrapped up with a nice ribbon on top and a happy ending. His movies reflect real life, a bit too closely at times. His films certainly make you think, and you may also find yourself uneasy watching his films, not knowing exactly HOW to feel about what you just watched. He is one of the greats and shall be remembered as such long after he's gone. Another film of his I have mentioned here numerous times before, and I'll keep on mentioning, is DIRTY HARRY (1971). It is THE movie that shot him into superstardom, a position he never left. You really need to check that one out, it's one of his best and an excellent cop thriller. Asia, BJ, as usual....GREAT reaction! Thank u! Cheers!

Awesome reaction and enjoyed watching with you!! Your reactions never disappoint!!! BJ, since your favorite is thriller crime films, be sure to check out the movie "Primal Fear" 1996 with Richard Gere and Edward Norton. It is a gripping psychological crime and legal thriller that still holds up over time. You won't be disappointed!

To answer your question about why Kevin Bacons characters wife left. He said it directly to her on the phone. The first thing he did was apologize to her. Then he said, “I pushed you away.” His partner was right earlier in the movie. After Kevin bacon said, “I don’t know why she won’t say why she left.” Then his partner responded, “maybe YOU are the one who is supposed to say it.” And so he did, and that’s what she needed to hear and finally started talking.

Lol! Out of curiosity what is it about the movie you don't like? It's okay if you don't like it.... everyone has different taste... and that is what I love about movies! 😁 I'm sure I'll request more that some people won't like lmao 🤣 😁

I think a motive for the murder was the younger brothers didn’t want their older brother, Brandon, to leave with Katie. They knew he was going to run away and they wanted him to stay.

SPOILERS!!
I love this movie! That’s because the original source material is a novel by Dennis Lehane. He has written some great works and the films based on those stories are always excellent. Clint Eastwood is a phenomenal Director. He knows to buy the rights of best-selling books so he can make the film. Hence “Mystic River.” I went down the same rabbit holes that Asia and BJ did when I watched this movie for the first time. If you watch it again, you’ll realize that there were clues all along, as well as red herrings.
The character of Jimmy is the King of the neighborhood, a tough guy, always in charge, like a Don in Sicilian families. Remember, as a kid, how he spoke to the two men that they thought were cops? He gave everybody lip, the expression on the child actor’s face says it all. Sean, who ended up being a cop, was a good friend. He was still a follower where Jimmy was the leader. Dave ends up being the kid who was chosen, abducted and molested. That heinous childhood trauma destroyed him for life. That explains why he was so conflicted. This story takes us through Dave’s mind from his perspective. His world was upside down and backward. He didn’t know what was real. His wife ends up telling Jimmy she thinks Dave is the murderer. Why? Because Jimmy is still the head of the neighborhood, killing those who have done wrong yet financially taking care of the families left behind.
I think Sean, the cop, knew that Jimmy killed Dave. Everything points in that direction, including their last conversation when Sean asks Jimmy “what did you do?” I don’t think Sean would ever go after him for the crime. As always, Sean is the follower and Jimmy is the King. He was morbidly sad until Celeste, his wife, reminds him of who he is.
There is another story by Dennis Lehane, made into a film, called “The Drop.” It stars Tom Hardy and is an excellent movie. I would highly recommend it for your reaction viewing. Many thanks to the VIPs who are picking really good movies of late.

if you enjoyed this, you might really like the movie SLEEPERS. also based on true history and the atrocities that happened to kids in those old juvenile prison systems. My dad was in one, he watched that movie once - cried - wouldn't talk about it ever again about what happened in there.

Interesting little fact. The Savage brothers referenced in the film? Real set of guys in a family. My father built their home (and their lawyers home one street over - no joke), they were our neighbors. WILD Stories. I learned how to play basketball in their driveway, and my brother took Karate with them near the back bay area in Boston, they would car pool as kids70s-early 80s) lol. crazy, crazy guys.

Agree. To me Gone baby gone is better. Mystic River is good but Gone is on another level. It's directed by Ben Affleck staring Casey Affleck, Amy Ryan, Ed Harris, Morgan Freeman. Dennis Lehane wrote both books he also wrote Shutter Island.

Now you guys got this one under your belt, you have to watch Gone Baby Gone! Made just a few years after this, by the same mystery novelist, takes place in the same neighborhood in Boston, absolute crackerjack of a murder mystery thriller, with an awesome cast giving career best performances. Mystic River is fantastic and won all the awards, I’m my humble opinion Gone Baby Gone is just as good, if not better. Amy Ryan got a supporting actress nomination for it and I will say to my dying day she should have won, it’s not a big part but one of the best performances (of a horrible person) I have ever seen

I just looked up why Sean’s wife left; in the book his job had made him distance, she had an affair, she ended up preggo and he started wondering if it was his, she left. The reason she never says anything on the phone is she’s giving him a chance to make amends. In the final phone call he does say sorry and then that’s when she speaks. He asks her to come home and she does. That’s a summary of what I read online. I’ve always wondered too….i had no idea. I need to read the book. This movie is so good ! It’s one of my favorites ! Sean Penn is phenomenal in this!!!!

Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon and Sean Penn! masterclass in acting AND directing by a great actor/director Clint Eastwood. Me too, fell for it and thought it was Dave, my first time watching this. BUT at the same time I knew I was watching something special and some top notch acting by Tim, Sean and Kevin. the young brother, the mute, was also Bruce Willis' son on Unbreakable.. not much of a spoiler, if you haven't seen it yet. great reaction guys! find better stash spots for your candy.

Just finished watching! So glad you guys enjoyed this!! The performances in this were so great! Especially Sean Penn!! His scenes were so heavy and he was so convincing as a grieving father!! When I first saw this, I thought it was Dave most of the movie too.. the ending totally shocked me! I had almost even forgot those 2 boys were even in the film by the time the plot twist was revealed lol 😆 The girl who played Jimmy's daughter is Emmy Rossum.. she is the main character Fiona on the show Shameless. She's actually a fantastic actress and has an amazing singing voice! Anyways so glad you enjoyed this! Clint Eastwood has made some bangers!! 😁
Hope you have a wonderful night!! 😊
