The actor who played Ice Man, Val Kilmer, actually had throat cancer and wanted to reprise his role so they wrote it into the script. He really can’t speak.

The F/A 18F jets are the 2 seater jets that Pheonix & Bob, Payback & Fanboy, and Yale & Harvard flew. The F/A 18E is the single-seater that Maverick, Rooster, Coyote, and Hangman flew.

The younger pilots were not new pilots. They were all certified as pilots years prior, then were all hand-picked to go to Top Gun for training as the best of the best. They had all then graduated and were working in their squadrons when they were called to do the mission. They were not new or inexperienced. They were picked to do this mission because they were the top pilots out of all of the Top Gun graduates! They're the best fighter pilots on the planet! They just didn't have the experience that Maverick had... partly because he was a pilot longer, and also because of technology. Maverick said the younger pilots were used to dropping bombs from a higher altitude and had less experience in dogfighting than he did. That's why Iceman wanted Maverick to train them... especially Rooster. I think Iceman feels guilty because HE was the reason Goose died. If Iceman hadn't cut Maverick off so that he could get Viper, not Maverick. Iceman stayed in the way even when he couldn't get the shot. That's what caused the engines in Maverick's jet to stall and induced the flat spin that ultimately took Goose's life.
Penny was a character from the first movie. She was mentioned in the beginning "Penny Benjamin" when Maverick was getting chewed out and then told he was going to Top Gun. The 2nd time she was mentioned was in the bb-q restaurant with Maverick, Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood (Maverick's lover), along with Goose, his wife Carole, and their son Bradley. Carole said "Goose goes home early for church and Maverick always goes home with the hot women! Goose told me all about the time you went ballistic with Penny Benjamin!" Maverick knew her before he ever met Charlie. He was on and off with Penny in the 36 years between Top Gun (1986) and Top Gun: Maverick (2022)!

Good reaction to this movie. I regretted not seeing this in theaters because apparently they had screens on the sides, making it a cockpit view. Huh, I wonder if they have that version available for the Oculus Quest 3. I'm going to look into that

GREAT FREAKING FILM!
A couple things:
- 5th Generation Fighters refers to the plane itself and not the pilot.
- The plane that Maverick and the other pilots are flying is the F/A 18F Super Hornet.
- The 5th Generation jet used by the enemy is the F-35 Lightning II
- The plane that Mav and Rooster steal at the end is the F14 Tomcat.
This is the plane that Mav and Goose flew in the original Top
Gun.
- The younger pilots aren't all "just out of flight school". They're all graduates of Top Gun and have been deployed and have all seen action. Top Gun isn't for new pilots. It's for the best of the best.
- At the beginning of the original Top Gun, Maverick gets in trouble for fooling around with an admiral's daughter, Penny Benjamin. He gets yelled at about it. That's who Penny in this movie is. She's a call back to the original movie and a character we heard about but never got to see.

I've seen many great films in the theaters over the years... legendary films, like: Jurassic Park, The Matrix, Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Lord of the Rings trilogy, Gladiator, Batman-Dark Knight, Avatar, Mad Max-Fury Road, Dune 2, and many more I can't think of off the top of my head... "Top Gun - Maverick" is 1 I'm gonna regret not seeing on the big screen... I already do

Mach 1 means the speed of sound, which is 767mph. Mach 10 would be 10 times that speed... so Maverick was going 7,672 mph in the opening scene

5 of the 6 actors threw up every day they did the plane work. They didn't fly, obviously, but they had to touch up their own makeup and stuff between takes because it would have cost to much to constantly be taking off and landing. They did take after take at a time and just stayed up in the air. To be clear, Tom Cruise did not do his own fighter jet flying. But that was his plane and him flying at the end.

Asia: "Is this the song??" Why yes, yes it is.....gets the blood moving as you head to the danger zone. Yes, BJ, it is the same song played in the original Top Gun movie. Sometimes I binge watch both movies now, so damn good! Tom Cruise still looking good after 36 years have passed, damn!!! Some of the real life footage always astounds me showing what our military accomplishes which can be so easily taken for granted. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie with you...wonderful reaction!!

Oh my gosh, watching this with you was so awesome. Your love and excitement had shown through just like all the rest of us when we first saw it. I felt it all over again. Tom Cruise put a lot of tender loving care into this sequel and really wanted it to be true to the original and the fans. He wanted it authentic with the jets, the flying, the story and more. He did good. I’m so glad you loved this.

Yea i was going to mention that as well. It's an f35 5th Gen aircraft, and the pilots may not be seasoned as she said also. But they could be very familiar with that aircraft. Even out of the academy they're more deadly than any fully trained pilot on an f-18. And I'm thinking also, that they say the pilots who are doing this mission were just at the academy, but so is Cruz and Top Gun. It's like they just wound up here by chance but they were still regardless the best in their class. Which also made me wonder why rooster was surprised he was there and didn't think he could do it.

5th Generation Fighter refers to the planes. They are the latest, most advanced Fighter jets. It does NOT have anything to do with the pilots experience. And 5th generation fighters are INSANELY advanced. The Tomcat they stole is the type of planes they flee in the original Top Gun, in the 80's, to give you an idea of the technological differences.

FYI the old f14 they flew out of the enemy base is the same jets they flew in the first movie. Also its fifth generation jets, the latest technological generation. The f18s are fourth generation (f14s were early 4th gen) and would be at a huge disadvantage to the modern technology of fifth generation fighters, ie targeting, speed, maneuverability.

Please for the love of god Asia & Bj 🙏. Please do the Mission Impossible movie series. the first one is a tense action thriller and my personal favorite. The second one is the worst of the series (still not a bad though) but from Mission Impossible 3 onwards, every installment is a complete action adventure thrill ride from start to finish, a little humour and romance too. Unlike most movie series it really does get better and better with each new installment. Tom Cruise doing the craziest stunts, risking his life for our entertainment. He's a crazy mofo.

Tom Cruise has been in numerous movies Rain Man, The Firm, Mission Impossible movies, The Color of Money, Last Samurai, Jerry Maguire the list is long and many of the stars who worked on the different films were Dustin Hoffman, Paul Newman, and the list goes on.
He is also known to do most of his own stunts. 👏

The term 5th generation is the technology of the aircraft. If you want a young movie with him in it try Legend (1985). It also has Tim Curry who played Pennywise in the original It and Mia Sara who was Sloan in Ferris Bueller's Day Off (his girlfriend) that you just watched. Think about starting the Mission Impossible franchise. He does all his own stunts and they get insane as the franchise goes on.
