Short Circuit 1 & 2 I think compliment each other even better than some might think, and I'm not even sure if it was by design or just happy accident.
In SC1, we witness Johnny 5's birth into a person or "true-self" through the lens of humans Stephanie and Newton, with Newton in particularly undergoing a similar transformation of exploring outside of his "zone" and expectations, instead realizing his own preferred self (Newton doesn't want to and isn't going to make anymore weapons, he wants to instead be with Stephanie and live on a ranch in Montana).
In SC2, Johnny 5 knows who he is but still struggles greatly with fitting in with other people, finding his own, "place within the group." Similarly, the human side of the story mirrors this pursuit with Ben, who also has his own struggles with being welcomed as, "part of the group." We see this throughout the whole movie in different little ways, such as when Ben is prepping for citizenship, or when the story is focusing on his difficulty in becoming comfortable enough to openly converse with Sandy, his crush.
As far as I'm aware, there is no third Short Circuit movie, and honestly I'm kind of glad that's the case. I think the story has a great end with how SC2 concludes, and I would expect nothing good were someone to try and make a modern day sequel to these two cozy classic of 80's.

This is such an awesome movie. Thanks for the reaction and to the person who suggested it. I was ten the first time I saw it and, not to sound cheesy or anything, but Johnny 5 and the character Ginger from Black Beauty gave me the courage to fight back against some pretty shitty foster parents.
It also left me with a deep love for the song Holding Out For A Hero. No lie, footage could be of something like a dude sitting on his couch eating cheetos or whatever and if they play this song I'll get totally pumped. Yeah dude! Get those chips!!!
