Apollo 13

Apollo 13

The only thing not realistic from this movie is all the drama..the crew was so cool and calm under all the pressure it’s been said of they made an entirely accurate portrayal it would’ve been the most boring movie ever

3BeerThunder

Isn’t that amazing!!! Another weird thing is that after he did Saving Private Ryan he narrated a shit ton of WW2 documentaries! It’s uncanny😶‍🌫️

Michael King

There was an HBO series back in 1998 called From the Earth To The Moon, that told the story of the entire history of the Moon Program from that time period that is a really good show. It was narrated by none other than Tom Hanks!

Jimazoid

Love love this movie!! Love watching someone else discover the absolute beauty of this movie! Talk about complete chaos resolved by amazing teamwork! Such pride in America as well! And the ending always gets a tear from me. Phenomenal cast!

Carol Rocha

Wow, back in the day of using a slide rule for calculations. I remember those days early in college using a slide rule...ugh! It wasn't until the mid 1970s that the lower-cost handheld electronic scientific calculators started to make slide rules largely obsolete. Boy do I feel old!! Thanks for watching this great historical account of Apollo 13. Enjoyed your reactions and reliving this part of history.

Kim

Hey BJ GM gave all the Astronauts of those missions a Corvette because GM was apart of it. They made the lunar rover and the free Vette to the Astronauts was all about marketing.

Christopher Dietz

So the opening scene of them watching Neil Armstrong's first walk on the Moon. My Mother had just gotten her job as a teacher assistant at North Texas State in Denton and my Dad was on his last year in the Navy on shore leave and had just finished building a T.V. and that was the first thing he watched on it live. This was before they even met each other and they both know exactly were they were at and watching that same Walter Broadcast.

Christopher Dietz

So glad you finally watched this. Lets' Go!!!

Christopher Dietz

I loved your entire comment. Awesome. Amazing what we can do.

Pink Martini AZ

There’s a really fun movie, I’d like you all to consider. It’s older. But it’s so good. So much fun. SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT - Julia Roberts, Dennis Quaid, Robert Duvall, Kyra Sedgwick…..I know you would both have a blast watching it. ❤️

Carol Rocha

Great choice and the fact it was a true story!! Amps to power a coffee machine 😂😱

CD

During the credits they show pictures of the real people portrayed by the actors. You should to go back and watch. Also, the person shaking hands with Tom Hanks at the end in the white naval uniform is the real Jim Lovell

Pamela Blumberg

I am so happy you finally got around to watching this. A perfect movie. I saw it in theaters. It was a huge deal.

Dan Gershgol

This is the VHS that my Mom (well one of them) that would watch, then instantly rewind to watch again. I can't tell you how many times I have seen this movie.. and it will always make me emotional at the end when they land. And when we finally visited Kennedy Space Center in Florida, it was just as emotional to see the shuttles. For the longest time I had the license plate cover that said "Failure is not an Option" and every day I look to the moon in amazement. Love love love. On a random side note, astronaut ice cream use to be one of my favorite snacks haha I hope to visit the Houston Space Center one day!

Bonnie Smith

One of my all-time favorites. I'm happy I got to watch it with you.

Rayna & Mike Sitter

You guys should watch the behind the scenes featurette - they interviewed all the actors and some of the real Eingineers at Houston who were part of the actual mission. They also had the real Jim Lovell (who you can see saluting the astronauts at about 2:17 here once they were on the Navy ship.) They talked about that MORE things actually went wrong on the real mission than they had time to show in this movie. They also showed the real filter that the astronauts had to make, and how closely it resembled what they created in Houston. Right there at the end during the credits, you heard Annie Lennox begin singing. You should go back and listen to that - she sounds incredible as a solo singing bit.

Bryan Sproles

Wow! I had no idea. Thank you for sharing that information

Michele Perez

A little trivia, Ron Howard is the Director. His father and brother are also in the film. His father Rance Howard played the priest, His brother, Clint Howard played Sy Liebergot. Who was an EECOM controller & was responsible for the electrical and environmental systems on board the Command Module. He was part of the team that helped guide Apollo 13 back to Earth.

Michele Perez

So here you call it a real live event, then say no one actually went to the moon. So...which is it?

RollingAcres47

This movie is scientifically accurate and truthful to the story with a few exceptions: 1. The argument over who was at fault for stirring the tanks never happened, as they all knew it was unforeseen. 2. The dialogue was taken almost verbatim from the logs and transcripts of the mission. The big exception is "Houston, we have a problem." This was originally said by Kevin Bacon's character as "Okay Houston, we've had a problem here." Mission control responded "Say again?". Then Lovell, Tom Hanks' character repeats "Houston, we've had a problem." 3. The other piece of dialogue added was "Failure is not an option." This originated from an email between an Apollo 13 flight dynamics officer and someone doing research for the movie. The officer said "...we calmly laid out all the options, and failure was not one of them." The person working for the movie took the phrase "failure is not an option," from that email. They thought it was such a good line and needed it in the movie, so they gave that line to the head of mission control, the dude rockin' the kick ass white vest!

RollingAcres47

I know that BJ picked up on this that they all drove Corvettes. This was a thing in NASA during that time. All the astronauts during the space race drove Corvettes for some reason.

RollingAcres47

go buy an 80" flatscreen to actually view the movies. you can use it as a monitor as well. i think that should be a goal. and if you got primo headsets with mics you could hear each other better with the sound turned up louder so you don't miss anything. love you guys.

Wolf

or you could say we beat the ever loving bleep out of the nazis then made them our bitches. ; )

Wolf

Well Done Asia!! Well Mother Effi.... Done. What a pick! All love

TinCan Cosmanaut

The computers used on spacecraft back then? Less than the power/skills/intelligence of a common smartphone. Crazy right?

koppite23

Tom Hanks is the GOAT and this was always one of my favorite movies growing up. Also since y'all were saying you were interested in Aliens, I highly suggest the X-Files movies if you needed any alien movie suggestions.

SunsN4

Awesome history here. I love when the patriotism was flowing out of you both during this flick. Damn straight! I love you both. Every single time we go to space truly is a miracle like no other. I remember watching Space X rocket and just put out at how the media didn’t care. They never show real and true news.

Pink Martini AZ

Yeah that was a great movie. Now you guys need to watch Capricorn One to get a different take on going to the moon.

Raider Ron

Asia, girl I was crying right along with you! Great reaction!

Wendy Garner

Fun Facts. Our astronauts Now come home the same way as the Apollo missions. Capsule coming through the atmosphere landing in the oceans with parachutes. Absolutely an amazing site watching live them returning. I have a video of last years return home flight over Florida. Amazing.

Kim Tilton

Still an amazing movie after all these years.

Amanda Powers

At 2:18:44, the officer that Tom Hanks is shaking hands with, is the real Jim Lovell!

Nicky the Greek

Isaac Newton is credited with the theory of gravity. Him being in drivers seat simply means that they can do nothing but fall towards Earth, ie, gravity is the only think in control at the moment.

Dan Gonya

You guys should take a trip over to the Houston Space Center museum.🚀

Carl 🐉

Ahh yes Forrest and Lt Dan's next big endeavor after the shrimpin' business. Seriously though, great movie based on true events. Back in December it was added to The National Film Registry of the Library of Congress which is another high honor this film was awarded. Hope everyone enjoys it✌❤ fam!

Darth Brooks

Great movie choice! I haven’t seen it in years and had a lot of fun watching it with you.

Melissa

Did you guys know that the rovers and landers and everything that are still on the moon aren't owned by anyone. So, if you wanted to go get one and take it home, there are literally no laws to stop you. 😂

Dan Gonya

Can we pleeeeease not do that here? Thanks.

precious926

Notice how Neal Armstrong pauses during his iconic first words on the moon? "One small step for man... ... ... ...one giant leap for mankind." Those two sentences mean the exact same thing. He screwed up. The line that was written for him was "One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." So during that pause, I like to think he was like, "dammit, I screwed it up, the whole world is watching! Ahh! Shit! Uhhhh."

Dan Gonya

Oh BTW, you know we didn’t actually go to the moon right? Check out the movie Fly Me To The Moon in theaters this July.🤔

Carl 🐉

I don’t know if this choice was based off of my list of movies based on real live events, but you can check another one off that list.🚀😊👍🏻

Carl 🐉

Ed Harris was so good in this. Hey played Gene Kranz. A great movie he starred in was The Abyss. Consider that one for your list :)

LynnC

Asia, it was so great to see that big smile on your face. It was a look of fascination and pure joy! Didn’t realize you had wanted to be an astronaut! lol. I would never be that brave! I think BJ really enjoyed this as well. I’m so glad you brought up the fact that Ken Mattingly (Gary Sines/Lt. Dan) ended up having to stay behind. Bc i believe as yall said, that it was a blessing that he was on the ground to do the simulations and get the re-entry procedure figured out. If Jack had been on the ground (Kevin Bacon) they might not have had a happy ending. I do remember watching Walter Cronkite (the TV news reporter) as he updated us on the status of Apollo 13. He was a seasoned reporter/broadcaster who did the Nightly News, and special reports. I can’t help but cry each time the chutes open and we hear Jim’s voice! (Tom Hanks) then the whole Mission Control room erupts in tears and cheers!! This is one of my favorite movies and I watch it fairly often. I’m so glad y’all got to experience it!

Carol Rocha

In case anyone wants to know. Apollo 13 the movie is based on the real Apollo 13 (April 11–17, 1970) which was the seventh crewed mission in the Apollo space program and the third meant to land on the Moon. It’s not the 13th Rocky spin-off movie of the Apollo Creed lineage. There actually is three Creed movies but I can see how people can mix this one up with those yo. Glad I can help. ✌️💙 🚀

Jesse

I had to look it up too. It's damn cold in space to have no damn heaters and walls as thick as tin foil - The average temperature of empty space between celestial bodies is minus 457.87 degrees Fahrenheit. 🥶🥶 And, yes this is a true story. Ron Howard (the director) said the real story was so full of emotion and drama, that he really didn't need to take any major creative liberties.

LynnC

I do remember my dad watching this movie. He was an engineer and always said NASA had the best people to figure out what to do

Dan63

Always get the bigtime "FEELS" with this one, enjoying it with you made it even better, Thanks

Ozzy24

Yes, I was a senior in high school when the actual Apollo 13 mission took place. People had gotten very complacent after we landed on the moon for the first time and took this mission for granted. Then all hell broke lose as the possibility of losing the crew became a reality. Up to that time, there had been no deaths in an actual mission, so it was quite tense. The movie was really pretty accurate in depicting events, including Marilyn Lovell losing her wedding ring in the shower the morning of the launch (she later got it back) and the fact that because they were slightly off course in re entry, it took over four minutes to get the signal back. Loved your reaction, esp Asia. So nice to see young people excited about the accomplishments of the space program and appreciate the work of all those people who managed to get them home using every means available.

sharkey197

Yay!

k p

Great movie and a great reaction. But we schould never forget that a SS Nazi named Wernher von Braun made and build the rocket that bring america to the moon. I hate nazis and i hate that america used a lot of them to get great. All there crimes they did are forgot, they even get medals from america for the work🤢 In germany they killed thousends of innocent people. So congratulations to your pride. Love from germany 🥰

Andreas

Remember how much you loved "Hidden Figures"? This is another great film based on true historical events. Do yourselves and us a favor and watch "Green Book"! Amazing, beautiful, true story brought to film. ✌️🎬

Lori

Ken I watch which yaw?!! :) 1 of my FAVORITE movies!! You’re gonna love it!!! :) Let’s go to the moon!

Carol Rocha
