American Psycho

American Psycho

Comments

One of my favorite films because it leaves you with a lot of questions at the end. I'm on the same page you 2 are on and those are characteristics of schizophrenia with him drawing all the murders. But This guys comment draws more questions about the real estate. I own 2 American Psycho sweat jackets from Cavitycolors.com, best site to get your horror merch. Here is a twisted fact, That song New Order-True faith has been used for an actual murder, it might have been inspired by this movie. There's this guy named Luka Magnotta who murdered a man and butchered him while playing this track. It was uploaded to a snuff website that got shut down because of the upload. I found out about this murderer through Netflix, it was a documentary called, Don't F**k with cats. Christian Bale is one of my favorite actors and another tripped out movie he acts in is called the Machinist. In this film he lost an insane amount of weight, 62 pounds. He wanted to go down to 99 pounds but the director didn't allow it due to health concerns. Jared Leto did good in this film but was more of a supporting actor role, but one that he did good in was Lord of War with Nicholas Cage Williem Dafoe has always been an amazing actor and yes he was the green goblin but some others that are kinda related to this film would be Inside and The lighthouse with Robert Pattinson.

Saints_Madness

Some of the killing he actually did. The shoot out was in his head. The realtor cleaned up the bodies. The apartment was such prime real estate. It would never sell if it got out that bodies were found. The movie is based on being self absorbed, personality disorders, and status.

Rio Mendoza

great reaction guys. thanks! This movie is so messed up. took me a couple times to really get it. And I saw no one mentioned, when they were in the bathroom stall and they were saying it tasted like sweetener, usually coke gets 'cut' with other stuf that looks like it. To stretch it and make more off it. Some people use drain cleaner and way other fkd up stuff. Should check out American Beauty soon. Thatll make up for this...sort of ;)

Unfortunately, Patrick Batman DID kill most of those people. The whole film it showing just how psycho PB is, and all the people around him. He did confess several times to people, they all thought nothing of it. Most people miss heard his rants and didn't even differentiate him from other men in the firm. PB was called many different names by people who "knew" him. It's clear the ATM "feed me cat" scene and the cop shootout was a delusion but, everything he talks about in his narration, is the truth. P.S PB's attorney never had dinner with Paul Allen in England. He didn't even know the guy he was with there, hence the oblivious behavior of the "young rich yuppie" elite. Great reaction!

Indigo

I want to say I have seen this before but I just don't remember. Anyways excellent choice.

Dan Gershgol

I think y'all are right with the "schizophrenic" episode. It's that combined with narcissism because he is so easily disgusted by anything dirty or improper. When he gets kicked in the face by the woman, he screams "NOT THE FACE" since he's all self-absorbed. But it's in his mind that the murders are happening. I think he's ugly with women for sure -- to the point maybe he was SUPER paranoid a woman would call the police or report it. I think he hates the homeless, and I think he's really good at looking at the "culture" section in the newspaper to steal reviews from critics lol. His stuff is so fake! So scripted! And who is it for? It's like asking AI to design you an opener for women to think you're interesting. Because of the superficiality, the delusions of power that we actually witness as real through the movie and all the rest is really just letting you walk a mile in the shoes of someone really messed up. When you name a movie "American Psycho," my first thought is "why American?" Why is the reference of America important? And the 80s too? The yuppie comments are true, I feel. People who are as shallow as puddles -- people who get to do all the drugs, no work, get all the women, have any need fulfilled (even if its the ultimate wrong) and there's never punishment. Even if they confess openly, their lawyer is able to put enough doubt in the air that we're confused. We're not even sure. The movie effectively pulls the old USA public relations trick on you. We didn't kill people -- we neutralized them (like george carlin said). Even if we know it's serial killing, and Patrick bateman and his victims know, "the inside doesn't matter." It's not what you know, but what you can prove. If you stay around long enough, like the secretary, you get proof eventually that the system is exactly as we can see it as this really detached viewer.

Potato Jones

It's a jab at wall street culture. Saying it's filled with psychopaths and sociopaths since people brush over everything Bateman says and does. He kills people, but most of them are just as crazy. He fits in.

The palette cleanser can only be Cannibal Holocaust, followed by Crash (flick adapted from the J.G. Ballard novel). [cackling]

tkitez (take it easy)

"Babe he just stomped out Toto!" Had me dying.

I have seen this movie so many times and I still don’t get it. I need a story to tell me what’s going on wrapped and tied with a bow. I think if this movie has explained itself better then I would love it. But still…I’ve watched it a bunch of times, read reviews, read explanations, watched videos about it and I still don’t really understand. I mean I do…but it took years to figure it out and I’m like ehhh. I love the acting, the story, the satire, but overall I had to work too hard to understand it even a little. Edit: I can’t listen to that Phil Collin’s song without picturing him flexing his muscles 💪🏼 and pointing at himself 😂😂

Michele G

This movie is so nuts! Brilliantly made for sure but disturbing af lol. How about a palette cleanser you guys lol maybe a sports flick? “Invincible” “Little Giants” “Rudy” “Angels in the outfield” “Little big league” “Rookie of the Year” “Draft Day”

Elizabitty213

Oh hell yes!!!

Freddie Miles

I have to return some videotapes.

Miss Melissa

90s too. And BJ asked where was he returning these videotapes…. Well, Blockbuster, of course!

N M

Thanks for the movie! Patrick Bateman has to be one of the most evil characters of all time. He just does not and cannot care. Even worse is the people around him do not seem to notice or care at all. Thanks again!

Matt

This movie was disturbing in all sense of the word🤯

Deborah Lewis

Anyone up for Dorsia for lunch today?

It's a comment on yuppie culture in the 80's. People of "high society" filled with greed and ignorance. All they want is to "fit in", have the best of the best in regards of materialistic stuff, experience the newest culture (restaurants, bars, theater, opera, movies, music). And that it's all that matters to them. They don't know each other on a personal level, it's all superficial, and because everyone buy and wear the "best", they look identical. In that regard they mistake one and other for other people. F.ex, Paul Allen thought PB was Marcus. The detective said in the first meeting that Paul Allen was spotted by someone twice in London, but it got confirmed that it wasn't him. PBs lawyer thought PB was a guy named Davis. How can we trust that the lawyer had dinner with Paul Allen, when he so clearly mistook his own client for another person. PB is the definition of a "psychopath", but he got paranoid after killing "Christy" with the chainsaw, that made him experience a psychotic episode. I think the only murders he didn't commit was shooting the cops and blowing up their car. It was all in his head - no one was chasing him. The other apartment belonged to Paul Allen, he used his apartment to "store" his victims, potentially blame the killings on Paul Allen. When he came back to clean up, the apartment had been renovated. Someone that knew PA probably took care of the mess. Something wealthy people can do and get away with. PB idolized serial killers, and I think he wanted to be caught in the end. That would make him even more special, but because of his status that didn't happen. In fact he is nothing special in his social circle. At the end of the movie he says "but... the inside dosen't matter".

Monnisnah

The casual "I'm meeting Cliff Huxtable for lunch" line, lmao

CS

I mean, I can see looking at the exercising and skin routine and being like "ok, yeah this guy has got it together", but how do you get to the homeless man and his dog part and still think "this is the life for me"?

CS

I just watched a true crime interrogation of a teen who models his life after Bateman. It's almost too cringey to get by. He repeats speeches, the laugh and all the products.

Rich

Guys, it was the 90s. Everyone had video tapes they needed to return before the late fee kicked in. Patrick just uses it as a deflection lol edit: 80's, not 90's oops

Kyle Turman

lets see paul allens card

UnbreakableMark

If you’re able to key into it, this movie is quite funny, satire at its finest. Most of the shit Patrick Bateman says is hysterical. People love to quote the Huey Lewis and Phil Collins monologues (him describing Phil’s ode to deep commitment and monogamy to two prostitutes is classic) but my favorite is this: “I'm on the verge of tears by the time we arrive at Espace, since I'm positive we won't have a decent table. But we do, and relief washes over me in an awesome wave.” And of course, the absurdity of the business card scene just tickles me. Though really it’s about the emptiness of that lifestyle, particularly the Wall Street “greed is good” culture of the late 1980s. Materialistic consumerism and vanity are all that matters - the best reservations, the best skin care routine, the best business card. They are so tuned out of real life and real emotions that they are all constantly confusing one for another. They’re interchangeable and vapid and self consumed. One of them could even be a homicidal maniac and no one would notice.

Miss Melissa

So originally I thought it was all in his head as well. Apparently it’s the most common interpretation. What I learned a while ago, though, was the writer/director did an interview and expressed that this was actually not correct. She said it was all mostly real. The whole confusion about people swearing he was with them while killing women was part of the message that within this culture of upper class businessmen there’s a lack of identity because everyone is basically the same, hence the obsession over little things like subtle differences in business cards, everyone has similar haircuts and suits, etc. That’s why people confuse Bateman for Halberstran and so forth. The lawyer and realtor at Paul Allens were apparently covering up what they likely assumed were Pauls victims to save face and probably assumes he didn’t act alone, which would explain his behavior at the end when telling Bateman that he had lunch with Paul in London. They just want the mess to go away while Bateman wants to absolve himself. It also has to do with the lengths people in those circles will go and how easily they can blend in or get away with things due to their status, like dragging a bloody body through a lobby or into a taxi; no one notices because they so don’t get paid enough to care, and if they did, those they work for can afford to bankrupt them in court over “frivolous” claims, so they keep their head down. Same with their peers, they just see nice overnight bags rather than anything suspicious, because in their life, nothing like that ever happens. But that’s why the director said it was mostly real. The cat message at the ATM was obviously in his head, the police car blowing up was fake, hence his look of bafflement at the gun. And that’s what kept Bateman AND the audience guessing; am I crazy? Is this real? How much is real? And that’s the true struggle for a psychopath; discerning fantasy from reality. In Patrick’s case, he’s extra unfortunate to be in a life where his circle of people pretty much allow these kinds of things to happen unchecked, so he’ll probably never get help or stop. Pretty interesting stuff!

Sean Zaccheo

This is my take too.... Bateman wanted to blend in and did so well that he ended up being forgettable like everyone else. No one listened to him, everyone only heard what they wanted to hear. Money driven rapid people.

Dana

Rolex wouldn’t allow them to use their name in this movie — so Patrick Bateman says “Don’t touch the watch” instead of “Don’t touch the Rolex” in the scene where he’s in bed with the hookers, although in the book he specifically says “Don’t touch the Rolex”, and is wearing a Rolex Two-Tone DateJust Oyster Perpetual Superlative Chronometer, the classic 1980s yuppie status symbol timepiece of success.

N M

love you guys and the reaction, this is based on a book that was a bit controversial when it came out. if i remember it is intentionally vague on whether everything was real or imagined, its kind of a commentary on the 80's new york wall street culture. like some of the people in that world are just sad psychos, but also because of the money/power they kinda could get away with some insane stuff. the book was written by brett easton ellis i think, some people tried to get it banned

davidbrunecz

Wow! One of my suggestions—intended or unintended. Thanks, Asia and BJ. I can’t wait to watch this :)

Anthony

I dont think it all happened in his head. Maybe getting chased by the cops but the rest was real. I believe it was more a play on how everyone on corporate wall st is the same. Materialistic and only care about themselves. Thats why everyone constantly confuses each other for the wrong people. The lawyer didnt really have lunch with paul allen in the end, it was someone else he confused him for. And the realtor cleaning up the apartment and bodies just to make the sale. Everyone even has the same title on their business cards lol.

Joey O

No but you said you and many more like it. That's great just saying I didn't like the movie. And that we all can have different opinions.

HipCat57

Isnt that the best when you have more than one thing to watch.

Rio Mendoza

Very true.

Rio Mendoza

They have a nack for doing that dont they haha

Rio Mendoza

For a second there i had to think if you were quoting the film then i noticed their were no quotation marks lol. Sorry you dont like the film their are a lot of us that love it. Including myself. I think if you give them a chance you find they will upload something you really like maybe even love. They are the best in the reaction game and im happy to be a part of this community. I hope you get something you like soon. Let us know when you do. We all love to talk about films and tv with each other. Everyone has a voice here.

Darth Brooks

bores the crap out of me

HipCat57

It was on the tip of your tongue at one point Asia, but yes: Patrick Bateman is also Batman

Benjamin

I thought it was making fun of yuppie culture in a sick way. I never really understood it but that’s how I saw it. It was all just in his head.🤷

Dan63

Definition of a great satire, one of the most re-watchable movies of all time!

Mark McNenney

Asia & BJ just made my night!! Thank you!! :)

Dana

Yay! My wishes have been answered - fantastic movie btw, can't wait to dig into it with y'all.

Benjamin

I love this movie because they recorded different versions of scenes with Detective Kimball and Patrick where Kimball treats him like he’s guilty, not guilty, or unsure if he is and they took random clips/parts from each so in the finished film you never get a feel for what he’s actually feeling also….Do You like Huey Lewis and the News?

Cole hauser

Well hot damn. Been waiting for this for a little while and it was a perfect time for it to be uploaded. Thank you guys so much!

Rio Mendoza
