Psycho 1960

Let the fun begin!!

Psycho 1960

Comments

Great reaction, my 1st time seeing it and it came out a few years after I was born. You have to watch TV series Bates Motel. Really cool show based on Psycho.

Bmac Tattoo

I read the book. Quick read but really good

Kelsey Perez

I'm always urging every reactor who does 'Psycho' to react to 'Psycho II' as I think it's even better than this but only a handful have done it so far.

Rob Walters

“Ima need you to get off my desk and move” 😂😂😂

Karim

Marion gets stabbed repeatedly in the shower, blood running down the drain. BJ: “you think she’s dead?” 🤣🤣

Kelsey Perez

A couple of things…Psycho was a book first. Written by Robert Bloch. Also, the actress that played Marion was Janet Leigh…mother of Jamie Leigh Curtis. Also, a good movie to watch about the making of this film would be Hitchcock

Shannon Bradner

I was two when this came out but my mom saw it then and never took showers after that. Enjoy

Beth Howton

Loved your reaction to this one! One thing I would suggest, especially if you check out any of the other Psycho movies, is after you finish with Dexter (including the followup series they did), watch the Bates Motel series which covers Norman's younger years with his mother. Phenomenal acting in that show and interesting to watch how it begins and eventually leads to what we experience in this movie.

Chris Marrero

Total classic! Your reaction to the big reveal was awesome. If you go to Universal Studios, be sure to do that tram tour of the outdoor movie sets. You will see the house, hotel set. And maybe a little of Norman himself. Hee hee. Everyone in the comments is correct about seeing the sequel. It was really surprising and good for it being made twenty something years later.

Pink Martini AZ

Busta Rhymes song you was thinking of is "Gimme some more"

Coolio

Psycho 2 is even better than the first, imo. I know, I know, the first is groundbreaking and a classic, but Psycho 2 has SO MUCH atmosphere and quirk. It's my favourite one!

Allie Aalto

The Birds is such a great movie by Alfred Hitchcock I think it's the greatest horror movie ever made because you can't really escape birds. Maybe that movie could go on the poll . 🙂❤️❤️

MichelleMyBell

She traded her car plus paid $700. The sticker price of the new car wasn't $700 lol

Coolio

Alfred Hitchcock was in the movie, for about 2 secs. He is standing outside the shop. Great reaction guys

William

My mother was 14 years old when this was released in 1960; she said that the advertising gave away very little about the movie, and that when she went to the movies to see it with her friends they were shocked and scared; there hadn't been anything like it before; was shocking for it's time.

Jacqueline Separovich

Hi Family! I remember when I was a kid I remember seeing a CLASSIC horror film called, “Rosemary’s Baby,” starring Mia Farrow. Please check it out!

David Croft-Ogawa

GREAT reaction guys, for this classic old film that still holds up more than 60 years later! No doubt, others have mentioned that this film (as well as Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Silence of the Lambs) was inspired by the real life crimes of Ed Gein, a Wisconsin farmer who turned out to be a cannibal/killer/grave robber. He did in real life keep his mother's corpse in the house, and robbed graves to steal parts from recently buried bodies, to "freshen up" his mother's continuously decomposing body! He also dressed up in women's skin, wore their private parts, their faces, breasts, etc. Outside of that, I hear he was a pretty nice guy. LOL! Janet Leigh, the actress who gets killed in the shower, was a pretty top flight star in her day, so to see such a major star killed off before the movie was even half way over was quite unheard of at the time.

Michael Wise

It was common back then. People would exit the vehicle on the side that was closest to the porch/sidewalk in order to not be in the way of traffic. I also assume it helped them keep their shoes clean, but that's just a guess, probably a side perk. Also it was much easier to do back then because the cars had bench seats.

Stacey Capito

If you go to Universal Studios in Hollywood the Bates Motel is part of the tour. There is a phenomenal series called Bates Motel and it's really good. It's mostly a prequel to Psycho.

Raider Ron

Janet Leigh the actress who played Marion married an actor named Tony Curtis and they had a daughter you guys know as Jamie Lee Curtis.

Raider Ron

Okay, just finished. What a fantastic reaction! Was so much fun getting to see the both of you having noo idea he was truly the killer/ the Mom character. Every time you would mention something about the Mom, I would smile. Asia flying back in her chair in fear... Then BJ laughing in disbelief he was tricked the entire film LOL Too good.

Bonnie Smith

I agree - you HAVE to watch Psycho 2!

Damon Young

Did you know that this movie was inspired by a real person. His name was Ed Gein. Ed Gein actually inspired this movie, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Silence of the Lamb.

Christina Terwilliger

Most people don't realize why she is so paranoid but $40,000 in 1960 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $414,900 today

Christina Terwilliger

Oh my heart! So excited to watch this one to end the Monday =) EDIT - the introooo! I love love love.

Bonnie Smith

The intro is soo SpoOOoky

Matthew Beilewech

Psycho 2 was made 22 years later, with the original actor Anthony Perkins, as Norman Bates! It does the original justice it deserves! And another twist, you will never see comming! Enlclude this in your October Halloween fest 🎃 Let Asia know, She will need a second blanket! 🤣

RSP LAS VEGAS

Yes please! Great idea 😃

Elizabitty213

After reading all the comments, it would be cool to do a "Hitchcock Classics Week." at some point. The movies are so good Rear Window, The Birds, Vertigo, Marnie, North by Northwest, Dial M for Murder, To Catch A Thief, The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), Lifeboat, The Rope.... all favorites, all classics. And there are more!

Rose Dallman

Hitchcock was outside Marion 's office window in a Stetson hat.

Delia Sewell

I thought it was weird too, when I first watched this movie, when they would exit out the passenger door. and I just assumed it had something to do with camera setting.

Mister Lou

Great reaction guys. You barely said two words for the first 30 minutes. It’s so intense you get sucked in immediately.

Joey

👆All of this. Great info, especially about the symbolism used in the movie.

Stacey Capito

🤣🤣🤣

Stacey Capito

There's actually a TV show based on this called Bates Motel. It was pretty good - a bit updated for the times but true to the story. Your reactions to the ending was just priceless....well done!

Beverly Dancy

I wish Hitchcock was alive to see this reaction. It’s exactly what he was aiming for and it’s definitely a movie to watch again.

Cynthia M Farrington

I remember liking part 2 aswell. And it is in colour 😀

Tuoppi66

Forgot to mention 40k in 1960 is about 415k today. Pretty nice house. Also 700 dollars in 1960 is 7,200 and change today.

Dan Gershgol

I love this reaction video. When Asia said that the mother must not be too bad off to be able to get down the stairs, go through the window and stab the girl, that was priceless.

Cynthia M Farrington

The first time I saw this I was also convinced their were two people.

Dan Gershgol

Janet Leigh was the mother of Jaimie Lee Curtis, married to Tony Curtis. She played the role of the matron of the school in one of the Halloween movies and drove the same car she bought in Psycho that was driven into the pond.

Cynthia M Farrington

A favorite trick of Hitchcock is to create doubt in the audience as to the good or bad of main characters. Janet Leigh was a major Hollywood star, married to Tony Curtis… starting with the post sex scene in the cheap hotel on a Friday afternoon, her stealing the money to run to her lover… you finally feel sympathy for her when you see the cop staring at her with the sunglasses. When she drives away you begin to care about her. Then she dies midway in the film, and you seek a character to like… and it becomes Norman. But Hitchcock gave clues… Marian “Crane” is a peaceful bird, while Norman surrounds himself with stuffed birds of prey. Great filmmaking from Robert Bloch’s great book.

Cliff Adams

Psycho 2 🔪 is really updated, and scary!

RSP LAS VEGAS

Awesome pick!!! The movie really holds up 60+ years later. That’s the mark of a great filmmaker. It’s hard to overstate how innovative and boundary pushing Hitchcock was here. Loved seeing your reaction. Great way to start the month!! 🔪🎃👻

Miss Melissa

You have to react to 'Psycho II' (1983) as well. Its brilliant! x

Rob Walters

Love the reaction and intro! Psychological horror movies are fun.🎃😅

Mikey Sea

Yall would love Rear Window

Randy Ripley

Someone else said the same thing about the Regan poster behind Asia as well. It reminds me of those creepy art pieces or statues with the eyes that seem to always follow you at any angle lol.

Darth Brooks

Additional trivia: Marion Crane was played by actress Janet Leigh, who is the mother of Jamie Lee Curtis, who played the lead (Laurie) in Halloween

Neely

OMG that intro is awesome!!! Starting off with a classic!! I'm here for it!!! Let's go!!! Happy October everybody!!! :)

Rebecca Karsner

Yoooo that new intro is 🔥 who else got some old school R.L Stine Goosebumps vibes from it? Diving in right now ✌❤ A&B fam!

Darth Brooks

Psycho! You check in, and You don't check out! A classic! 🔪

RSP LAS VEGAS

Excellent reaction yall…omg! I loved Asia’s face at the end when she said, “wait a minute?!” Lolololol…both y’all chins just dropped…and ya mouths were open for a hot second…so good…glad you enjoyed it! Hope you watch more Alfred Hitchcock especially the movie, The Birds! Can’t wait to see more scary movie reactions from y’all…

Nuthin Good at 4

When I think of Voorhees I think of the Friday the 13th Jason movies. Did they actually play a person with the last name Voorhees in Nightmare on Elm Street with Kruger?

Clockwork360

I saw you notice the Busta Rymes song at the start. It’s called “Gimme Some More” Love that song

Eamonn Locke

It's like she works at Mesa Verde.....

Justin Freeman

I found him! Hitchcock is standing outside the window of Marion's work. You'll see him standing, facing traffic with a tan hat on at 9:57 ;)

Indigo

Yay!!! I'm so happy you started with this one. Wasn't expecting that!! When I was a kid, I remember my dad waking me up about 10 pm to watch this with him on TV. He's the one who got me into old black and white movies.

Kimberly Tyda

Exactly, the cop was used to help build suspense early in the movie. His part in the movie ceased to exist once Marion was killed but we don't really know that through the rest of the movie. He was intended to be a distraction, like the extra piece in a puzzle that you don't need.. you will keep trying to see if it fits somewhere.

Stacey Capito

He was in the window of Marion's workplace. 😉

Stacey Capito

BJ that guy at the red light crossing the street was her boss. Now Hitchcock was famous for being for a moment in his own movie. Standing here sitting there it makes the viewer see if they locate him.

George Bakis

♥ What a great intro!

Jennifer James (wtfwebgoddess)

All of this 👆🏼, nicely said 👌🏼

Patty Estrada

Some movie trivia. The character Marion Crane was seeing is named Sam Loomis. The same as Michael’s Doctor in the Halloween franchise. It was John Carpenter’s nod to Alfred Hitchcock.

Eamonn Locke

(SPOILERS) Love your October movie intro, it's going to be an Asia & BJ classic! Imagine theater-goers seeing this movie in 1960. The age of peace & love hadn't even started yet on the West Coast. People were just coming off their innocent lives in the suburbs from the 50's, just like all those programs: My 3 Sons, Leave It To Beaver, Ozzie & Harriet, etc. Hitchcock made a film that freaked everyone out from the very beginning. There was a lot of foreshadowing. You never saw the mother or Norman at the same time, until he was carrying the corpse downstairs. Norman was experienced in Taxidermy. He had an unnatural relationship with his mother from childhood on until she found a man. I'm certain Norman poisoned the stepfather and his mother. And so the story started. Those theatergoers in 1960 were inexperienced when it came to psychological thrillers. This kind of mental disease was never discussed. Family members with this disorder were institutionalized and never spoken of. Imagine how shocked they were at the end, first finding out about the mother, THEN the frank discussion at the end about mental disorders, transvestites, multiple personalities, etc. NOBODY talked out loud about that stuff in the 60s! For the original theater presentations, there was a blurb with Hitchcock at the beginning telling people not to say anything when they left the theater. Don't spoil the ending for others. That was unusual for its time, too. P.S. Does anyone else find it a bit disturbing that the picture of Linda Blair in the Exorcist is just left of Asia's head? It's creeping me out. The more I try not to look at it, the more I look at it. Gack!

Rose Dallman

The cop near the beginning was nothing but one of the things adding to her paranoia. Hitchcock movies are a wild ride. Dial M for Murder is great. (Along with other suggestions I've seen here like The Birds and Rear Window.) You should read up a bit on Alfred Hitchcock. He was incredibly innovative. Oh, and side note: Janet Leigh (Marion Crane) was the mother of Jamie Lee Curtis.

bbbfst

Got to see this reaction

Will Zamora

The Birds is decent.

Rich

Yay. I love Hitchcock. My 2 favorite film of his are “Rope” and “Rear Window.”

Kristin Kanan

Bathrooms weren't shown in movies that often prior to Psycho. That alone was a taboo. I liked the scene where Bates is showing her the room and he shyly points to the bathroom instead of actually showing it.... keeping audiences expectation in the norm... until the shower scene and leading lady was killed. Hitchcock broke several movie making norms in 1960 with that one scene. 😜

Stacey Capito

Fun fact. the main psycho from psycho went on to play Pamela Voorhees in the Nightmare on Elm Street series, and has recently been featured in the Daily Mail's 'Top Ten Women in Cinema Who Look Like They Would Make a Decent Medieval Longbow'. She placed third behind Richard Whitely and the fourth Earl of Flop.

Rich

When this was released the shower scene affected droves of women who were afraid to shower. They made sure a loved one etc was in there home. This made the newspapers and TV plus main story in interviews with many of the stars back then.

George Bakis

Psycho is considered to be one of the first horror slasher films. It was very controversial in 1960. Marion Crane's character development went against all the rules, she had poor morals, yet audiences were somewhat rooting for her, and then Hitchcock kills the leading lady towards the beginning. The whole bathroom scene showing the toilet and her 🔪 in the shower was taboo. Also you couldn't show the actual violence (stabbing) or nudity. So he was able to create a way around it so that we know what's going on and our minds eye will fill in the parts he couldn't show. But that also worked to his advantage because you can't really see who is stabbing Marion, which further created suspense/tension. The themes of trans/cross and psychological illnesses weren't understood very well at the time. Hitchcock made it a point to educate audiences. He fought hard to keep as much of the movie intact without bending too much to censorship. Since it was so successful at the box office, what was acceptable in American filmmaking completely changed. Also, the way he was able to manipulate the camera to get certain shots he wanted (like Marion's eye at the end of the shower screen) was unusual. His techniques were widely adapted in filmmaking. I think it's still common to study his techniques in film making schools. Hitchcock wanted reoccuring music to help build tension throughout the movie, and the composer crafted it beautifully. Jaws 🦈 and Halloween 🎃 utilized this technique as well. People will know the movie it's from, even if they haven't seen it. The twist at the end... the whole movie was designed to give you all the info you need but keep you distracted so you can't put the clues together. Remind you of The Sixth Sense at all? 😜

Stacey Capito

Psycho 2 is a MUST!!!!!

Joe Lazarus

The intro is AMAZING!!!! Love the reaction as always! Hopefully you’ll do Psycho II at some point!!

Tyler Roth

Great intro! Love it!

Eamonn Locke

Looks like there was only a few drops left in the bottle, could've definitely used a lot more to be more convincing

Janitor

Agree! Bates Motel TV show was very well done.

Stacey Capito

He definitely paved the way and his filming style is still used today.

Stacey Capito

So amazing. You both experienced the movie the way it was meant to be experienced. An absolute classic of filmmaking. This movie along with Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Silence of the Lambs were all loosely based on the real killer Ed Gein. Funny thing is Psycho was the closest to the real story while the others were way over the top (good in their own way, though). Asia, you're right that the highway patrolman was following her just because he was suspicious, and Hitchcock's cameo is he is standing outside the window of the office she works at when she first arrives after leaving Sam.

Jon

Great recommendations for Hitchcock movies

Stacey Capito

Halloween 2007 remake or Friday the 13th remake is a must

LG59

Thank you for watching! Fun fact: in theaters, before the movie started, they would show a clip of Alfred Hitchcock, asking people who had already seen it to please not give away the twist to anyone. I really think you should watch Bates Motel. It’s a TV series about Norman and his mother and it is completely modernized, but it does so much justice.

MumofZack

Gotta love that Bernard Hermann score (and of course 90's bustah)

Potato Jones

This movie arguably started the slasher genre

Patrick Silkes

Can’t wait to get home and watch this!!! Thanks for this reaction. If you’re interested in more Hitchcock, who is the master of suspense, check out “Vertigo”, “Rear Window” and “Rebecca”.

Patty Estrada

Hitchcock used chocolate syrup as blood in the shower scene it shows up better on the screen then blood.

George Bakis

If you like Hitchcock, you gotta see, “The Birds,” and “North By Northwest,” which was an inspiration for the comedy film. “Throw Momma From The Train.”

David Croft-Ogawa

🔪🔪🔪

daisy

YES!!!!

JL Green

The actress in the movie is Janet Lee, the mom of actress Jamie Lee Curtis

Teri

🤣 same! I dropped what I was doing immediately. Love this movie.

Stacey Capito

ahh the intro is absolutely perfect love y'all so much 🎃🦇👻🖤

ang

fyi Paul McCartney requested the Beatles Producer, George Martin, to put some violins in their song ELENOR RIGBY that sounded similar to the music from Psycho.

Teri

I love the intro. Looking forward to the rest of the scary stuff.

Andi Szilagyi

THANK YOU FOR THIS! I've been hoping that you would get around to this movie.

Stacey Capito

This is the first time I've seen this film since 1949 with my two pet ferrets at the time. They both later went on to lead very successful military careers but both love an annual meet up with the bois.

Rich

Can’t beat a classic - and this is def a horror classic. I love the new intro for HorrorTober! You’ve made my night thank you 😃

SilverDoe🎔

I was right in the middle of another YouTube movie reaction, then this notification came through and I was like, 'Nope, Asia and BJ are calling me to the fam. I'm going over there.' 😄 Hope you guys enjoyed. This is a Hitchcock classic. Anthony Perkins' performance alone makes this movie, even if he was forever typecast after it, lol

Renee S

Classic Horror Film!

Dan63

Yes!! One of my favorite movies! Fun fact, Janet Leigh (Marion Crane) is Jamie Lee Curtis’ mom

Kelsey Perez

And it begins. Woohoo thank you guys.
