Well I looked it up and the director says he didn’t kill her but I think to outright say “It is obvious he didn’t” is perspective based. Being wronged is a perspective, yes technically from our eyes she didn’t wrong him but who’s to say he doesn’t see it like that. I easily could see him realizing that they weren’t actually dating then start to think “well why wasn’t she dating me? Does she think she is better than me like everyone else, she has wronged me” even tho she didn’t do anything wrong he could see it that way.
To me if he doesn’t kill her, then that scene makes no sense and is kinda weird/lame. Yeah you have the drop of they aren’t dating but then he pulls the finger gun trigger to his head and she gets scared, I assumed he attacked after that but if she doesn’t die dude literally goes into her place says nothing, makes the gesture then stands up and walks out like “aight peace”, that scene sounds boring and lame af lmao

Wut? No, it is not inferred at all that he killed his neighbor! In fact quite the opposite is inferred! She wasn’t a terrible person, so he obviously didn’t kill her. Just like he let his little person coworker go. He realized it was all imagined in his head and he had invented those times he spent with her and he rushed out. It was part of his delusion and his realization also kickstarted his final transformation.

When Asia said "I thought this was a kids movie" my immediate statement was "oh hell no it isn't" lol no one warned you you were in for a rough ride with this one? Shoot I told one of my friends when they went to watch this in theaters plan to do something fun and happy afterwards cause this movie will effect you emotionally and is brutal.
From what I have heard a lot of this movie isn't cannon, not sure, so there is a good chance in most Batman lore that his dad was an actual good person and that it wasn't a direct result of the Joker that got Bruce's parents killed but again I'm not versed in DC or Marvel lore. I also didn't notice a response when you find out that he actually wasn't dating that lady at all and it is inferred that he killed her too, that was a crazy oh shit moment for me in theaters lol.

Joe chill killed Thomas and Martha Wayne, this is a different multiverse. Jack Nicholson in the 1989 Batman played as a gangster joker named Jack Napier. I’m not sure who Heath Ledger joker was though. This movie is brilliant, when I saw this in theaters I was completely satisfied and eager to watch it when it released. Joaquin Phoenix captured this version of joker so freakin well. Am very excited for the next movie!

I feel most other comments have already explained some major points of the film. It's an absolute stunner and its gravity/story pulls you in before even realizing it had. There is a reason why so many love the Joker character. Yes, he is dangerous and crazy and omg, I wouldn't want to cross paths with him ever... but break down the message of society and its system treating the "lower" class and many can then instantly relate to such feelings.
If you get curious, please Youtube the acceptance speech of Joaquin Phoenix for winning the Oscar for this. It is heart warming and gives such truth. Perhaps I am biased as I consider myself an animal activist but the overall message of love and compassion, working together is so important.
On a side note as this film makes me think of it.. September is suicide awareness month. Mental well-being, depression, suicidal thoughts tend to go hand in hand. If anyone ever feels like they are alone in this world, know you are not. Reach out and we are here to truly listen.

Also idk if you guys caught it (bc there was so much going on) but the woman that met Aurther in the elevator was never his friend or girlfriend and that time meeting in the elevator was probably the only REAL interaction they had everything else was just his imagination. When i first saw this movie that blew my mind because i thought there was really one person who was there and cared for him but it was all in his head, incredible writing on this movie. Kind of made me think differently about how to treat others with kindness even if you dont know them or if they come across as strange bc you really do never know what someone is fully going through, and thats what i really felt like this movie was about a cautionary tale about someone who was always shit on and treated like he was bottom of the barrel (since literal birth).

one thing id have to say is that i know that this movie isnt cannon for the batman/dark knight movies. And maybe he wouldnt be on the same organized level as the joker in dark knight there are definitely similarities, sure. batman would definitely be able to take him in a fight but thats how Heath Ledgers joker was as well, they never really fought eachother until the end with the joker basically alluding batman the whole time and even when it did come to the fight the joker didnt put up much of a fight and had to sick the dogs on him. So even though this movie isnt cannon i dont think it strays too far from how the dark knight went (aside from the obvious age difference). I love both jokers in their own respective ways but i think they have a bit more similarities than people give credit for

What kind of Joker would this version turn into? He's gonna have at least 20 plus plus years on Batman, and Arthur doesn't seem capable of really being the "prince of crime" moniker the joker normally carries. This version implies that an anti-social political movement is really the Joker's "superpower" -- if you want to call it that. In 20 years, Gotham is probably even worse off and this Batman would hold a grudge for this crime killing his parents.
But how would Arthur come back into the fold? The above scenario would just be establishing the setting. And how does this Joker get organized? If ever? Joker is crazy, but he's not meek or incapable, and while Joaquin is great, I just don't see how this version challenges Batman. He seems a little too behind the ball. Not saying Arthur is stupid or anything, but this isn't an everyman being turned into a villian -- it's someone who is portrayed as really sick and almost lost because of it. That and the chain smoking, is Arthur kicking it when batman's ready to beat that behind?
Just some thoughts -- not saying this movie is bad by any means -- but I am seriously curious on what this Joker looks like against ANY batman we've seen so far. That's a 0-10 matchup in my book in favor of Batman. Christian Bale's batman is probably tied with Pattenson's for realism, but this Joker doesn't rank as a threat against either (yet).
If Christian Bale's Batman fought this dude, it would be over in one punch, but that's just my thought.

Batman's parents were not killed by the Joker, they were killed by a man named Joe Chill. The movie versions I think starting with Tim Burton's started with changing it to Joker killing his parents.

This movie...wow! It came out on the cusp of the George Floyd murder, Covid, the elections and the civil unrest in 2020. It's such a hard movie to watch at times but was a perfect example of art imitating life, right down to the Trump like portrayal of Thomas Wayne. Joker is in a way cut from the same cloth as Batman. BTW this movie was directed by Todd Phillips who did The Hangover movies. Cant wait for the sequel!

I love this movie! my biggest gripe is that in the subway shooting scene, Arthur uses a 5 shot revolver but shoots eight shots total without reloading! Hollywood always gets guns wrong!! but it is full of people that know nothing about firearms even though they love to preach about them! forgive me for being a little political but a simple google search would make the movies more authentic. it wouldn't be a big deal if they didn't get details like this wrong 99% of the time. anyway love your reactions as always! and his acting was phenomenal, but Heath still is king!! Heath drastically changed his voices tone, cadence, etc. from any of his previous roles. his mannerisms, walking, expressions and just everything was totally different than anything else he put on screen. he was unrecognizable! and the character he played before the joker in The Dark Knight was a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain. nobody will ever top his joker. but i give both actors 10/10 for their performances!

I'm not buying the "unreliable narrator" theory. If you take the movie at face value, if you believe that everything happens as it appears...the movie works perfectly, no need for an alternative explanation. If the "unreliable narrator" theory is true, then the whole message of the movie changes...

This movie did such a great job explaining the evolution of the Joker character. The acting is some of the best ever. The camera angles, the costumes, the color schemes, etc were so well thought out and brilliant. The emotions... disturbing how you can feel sympathy for a killer.
Joaquin Phoenix lost over 50 lbs and studied people who have the laughing disorder. That's just what I can remember of the top of my head... I know there's more things he did to prepare for the role that was fairly extreme.

Hi Asia & BJ,
Just to clear a few things up and raise a couple of questions.
The movie is set in the late, late, 1970s or very early 1980s. It has NOTHING to do with the other Batman movies. It's a stand-alone movie.
The Joker's name in the comics and movies is UNKNOWN. There's been a couple of comics in DC that give different names. But what the Joker's real name is a mystery. In this movie they name him Arthur Fleck. It's not canon.
This isn't even the darkest Joker out there. There are comics of the Joker far worse. The Killing Joker for one. The Joker in the Batman graphic novels from the 80s "The Dark Knight". Much worse.
Joaquim Phoenix does look skinny and old in this movie. Dude's a method actor, he literally ate only 1 apple a day for 4 months before they started filming. He got down to 120 lbs. Oh, he was also the bad guy in Gladiator, the Emperor's son. Remember? If you ever get a chance to see him play Johnny Cash, wow what a movie.
DeNiro's character is supposed to be a Johnny Carson rip-off.
The movie is from Arthur's point of view, and Arthur is absolutely nuts. He would be what you call an unreliable narrator. So, everything in the movie you see you have to take with a grain of salt.
His relationship with the woman was all in his head from the beginning. I always wondered if he killed her and the kid or not.
Remember the beginning of the movie when Arthur's banging his head against a door in the mental hospital? Maybe the whole movie was just him imagining it.
Every time I watch it, I pick on a new, little details that do not jive with everything else. Like his gun on the subway, it holds 6 rounds. Count the number of times he pulls the trigger without reloading. It's heavy movie watch but a re-watch is definitely worth it.
Jerry

Joker is well-known for being Batman's arch nemesis. Joker is brilliant, totally unhinged and a force for utter chaos. However, while on some level Batman is the opposite side of the coin to Joker they do have a lot of similarities too that link those two sides. They did change some of the canon for this, but it is still excellent movie and Phoenix was great in the role.

Joaquin Phoenix won an Oscar for his performance in this. He may be the best actor of his generation.
This movie also owes a massive debt to 2 early Scorsese/DeNiro films: Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. DeNiro’s appearance here is the acknowledgment of that.
Also, the name of the comedy club, Pogo’s, is a reference serial killer John Wayne Gacy.
