Hey here's a link, it looks like Neil DeGrasse Tyson has already talked about this movie. I'll link it, if the link doesn't post, just search youtube for his name and "movie interstellar". I am off to watch the videos now.

Info dump for you. Closest star to Earth is the Sun. Next nearest is Proxima Centauri at about 4.2 light years away. A light year is measured by teh speed of light. So it would take you 4.2 years travelling at the speed of light to get there. Sadly, based on our current understanding of physics speeds up to and certainly exceeding light speed aren't possible. This is partly due to the effect of time dilation (time slows the faster you go) and energy needed to propel you to those speeds.
As to your other question at the end. The guy on the last planet we can assume has died at some point in the years that have past. The first planet they went down on put them into the time dilation field of the black hole (gravity can slow time effectively) and 28 years had past by the time they came back to teh ship. Add in the ten years the original mission had been gone for, plus the age of the person (say 30) and they would be around 68 years old if they didn't go into their sleep pod. Could have died to any number of reasons over the years too.

the argument could be made that we are 5-dimensional beings and have control over 4. the first 3 dimensions are the proportions of our physical beings. the other two dimensions are time, as you said, and space (our physical location). As you said, time continuously moves forward, but it doesn't necessarily mean that we are physically moving. Your example of a meeting time is actually a better suited a demonstration that time and space are linked. If I tell you to meet me at 12pm, your next logical question is "where?" If I ask you to meed me at a specific place, you'll ask "when?" It's really demonstration that time and space don't make a lot of sense without each other.
Edit (from the future, haha): I suppose now that I think about it more, since they are linked, space and time really are the same dimension which would mean that you are correct in saying that humans are 4-dimensional.

2 years to get to Saturn is actually remarkably fast. As for "It took them 2 years, how many light years would that be?" ... the term "Light year" causes a lot of confusion since it's not actually a measurement of time, but a measurement of distance. Specifically, it is the distance light travels in a year, in that respect "light year" is very literal and is roughly 6 Trillion miles.
Just to close the loop, it takes the light from Saturn to reach Earth roughly 80 minutes. Since there are 525,600 minutes in the standard Earth year, Saturn is roughly 0.00015 light years from Earth.
80/525,600 = roughly 0.00015221

We view human beings as being 3 dimensional, but in reality we are 4 dimensional. We only have control over 3 of the dimensions. For example I can say hey guys let’s meet at X, Y, Z coordinates at 12pm. I have control over x,y,z and can change them, but I can’t change time. It only goes forward. So by that logic a 5 dimensional being has control over the 4 dimensions (including time) so time is no longer linear only moving forward. It’s all at once. So they have access to all moments in time past or present and have control over it like we do with the other 3 dimensions. So it’s not that he went “back” in time. What he did always happened and it always will happen, his present self just didn’t know because he hadn’t done it yet(although he would eventually). That’s how “time travel” “works”. The age thing is absolutely real and verified science. The larger the gravitational pull the time changes relative to the viewing perspective. So while they went to the water planet for 3 hours because the other guy was out of the gravity pull it was 23 YEARS for him. The same when they went into the black hole. They only aged minutes but the universe outside of the pull aged 51 years. So that’s why Edmunds was dead. When they say Cooper was 120+ years that is only in REFERENCE to everyone else. His body was actually only 31+ the 2-3 years of travel they did.

Glad I watched this one. For the longest time I couldn't figure out why people liked this one so much, and it was because I was thinking this was a completely different movie (Contact I think). This was a fun ride and definitely a lot of hard concepts to wrap your mind around in this one.

The best way to grasp the concepts of the movie is to go to ChaptGPT and say "explain gravitational time dilation to me like I'm 12 years old." :)

fun fact, time slowing down in a strong gravitational field is absolutely real. GPS satellites/computers operate on such precise time scales that they have to take into account the fact that time passes slower on the surface of the earth compared to where they are in orbit.

Amazing movie! The main thing to take from the end of the movie is the equation to save earth couldn’t be solved fully because you needed the data you can only find inside a black hole. So when him and TARS where in the black hole, they transmitted the data from inside the black hole to Murphy through morse code on the watch, so she could solve the equation and get people off the earth!

If you strip all the sci-fi trappings and just look at the bare core of the movie, it's about a man (let's call him... Nolan) who has to go very far away for his job (like, idk, shoot a movie or something, maybe?), and misses out on being with his kids while they grow up. And while he feels that his time away is short and he hasn't accomplished exactly what he envisioned (like doing a perfect movie), he is surprised at how much his kids have changed and grown without him when he gets back. And he wishes he could find a way to reverse time and have stayed during their childhood. It's just a sweet story. The mind-bendy scifi is just the dressing.

My takeaway was always that the "fifth dimensional" future humans capable of manipulating gravity across time (and also keeping Cooper alive during his excursion into the black hole), were all descended from the new home planet that Brand sets up at the end. I think it creates a paradox though, where Brand and the Endurance cannot get to the new planet to set it all up without the wormhole in the first place, and the wormhole doesn't happen unless the future humans have descended from the planet which Brand sets up so that they can help Cooper survive while in the blackhole so that he can send Murph the gravity cheat codes.
Movie messes with your mind, but it's definitely one of my all-time favorites. If you want another Nolan movie that will blow your mind (and my personal favorite of his), check out The Prestige. It'll stick with you.

As I was browsing sites to better understand tessaracts, I found this linked article about a possible Interstellar 2.. It's mostly about the director and his other films, but there are several paragraphs explaining the ending for the first movie.

I've seen the movie several times and, bit-by-bit, started to understand "parts." But was never able to pull everything together. Watched your reaction and was suitably impressed with Asia's explanations at the end. So I went to iMDB and found the movie synopsis. It explains quite a bit in laymen's terms (thank God). I could never understand all the bits at the end: "they" meant humans in the future; the space with the libraries was a tesseract; his aging, etc. The synopsis really helped, and it doesn't have equations!

I loved it but had no idea exactly what it meant or happened. This second time though, it all made more sense. I cried three tiiiimes. LOL Love always wins and is the answer. Hans passing out on an organ and pressing all the keys is great. This movie could have used some tighter editing. The nods to 2001 can stay but entire "love might be a higher dimension" part is dumb for a scientist to say and confused the very end. The Matt Damon stuff could have also been shorter..

As cooper descended into the black hole the beings of 5 dimentions saved him which was stated that the beings were just humans far into the future super advanced and placed him into a 3 dimentional place built to represent the 5 dimentions so he could understand it. So the demention of gravity and time was represented there. And since tars had the quantum data from in the black hole. Cooper transmitted that data to his daughter via the watch which allowed her to finish the tgeory of gravity allowing humanity to leave earth. Gotta love relativity

When Cooper was in that other dimension looking at the bookcase from the other side he was saying that people in the future would have the ability to create that “time loop”for lack of a better word which allowed him to go back before he left and knock the books off of the bookcase.
Remember when Cooper and Brand kept saying “they” were helping them like it was aliens who were helping and they couldn’t figure out why, I think it was people from the future when we saw Murph as an old lady.
When Cooper woke up and saw the kids playing baseball, they were in a giant circular space station that was named after Murph which is why when the kid hit the ball it broke a window in a house at the top of the circle, if that makes sense. That’s what I think anyway, someone please correct me if I’m wrong.
I just think it’s so sad how much time Cooper lost with his kids. Murph was only 10 years old when he left and when he saw her again she was on her death bed.

This movie has one of the greatest soundtracks in cinema history. There are two or three of the pieces that are so epic, when you hear them on piano or organ or especially an orchestra? Personally the waterworks erupt.

Well dont force yourself to watch it silly. Some people just like things really simple and easy to understand and there is nothing wrong with that. Im sure they will do an action or comedy soon they have a really good track of making everyone happy. This film is amazing if you like this type of film. Its long very detail oriented and lots of thing going on and not everything is explained and shown on camera Nolan trusts his audience to figure things out so things can feel confusing. I love this film its one of my favs ever. I hope you get to watch something you really like dont force yourself i tried that with Dexter and it did not work out.

It gave me even more of an appreciation for this movie after I fully understood. I saw this movie first few days of release at Imax (by the way if you're watching a Nolan movie and your ears aren't bleeding you're doing it wrong) and I still remember the gasps when Matt Damon showed up, they kept that secret well during production.
I would advise not overthinking in the inside the black hole bit, it's by far the weakest part of the movie conceptually - you just have to accept that they were provided with a way to use gravity to communicate with the past by the future human people. You also have to ignore that he would have been vaporised in milliseconds - if the gravitational forces didn't do it, all the matter swirling around the black hole would have.
Not many movies produce black hole physics papers that contribute new understanding of black holes where they figured out how black holes would look - you sometimes see the results of those papers popping up in movies and games these days because they completely shifted our understanding. That's what happens when you have (at the time) future Nobel for Physics winner Kip Thorne advising.
Amazing score too, I've always wondered how many people learned to play the organ after this movie was released..

Hello, new sub.. enjoyed revisiting this story with you guys.. Hans Zimmer creating a masterpiece of a score.. the small subtle organ tone continuously playing in the background that has the rhythm of a beating heart, so good.. Nolan was able to capture time and life so well in my opinion.. I mean, the sci fi element is just the subject, but it's not the foundation.. the foundation is the relationships with one another carried over time.. just my opinion.. thanks BJ and Asia.. had fun watching with y'all..
