A Time to Kill

A Time to Kill

Comments

Man, I shouted when BJ recognized Judge Noose as Longshanks from Braveheart! Awesome reaction video folks!

Adam Ramirez

Back to watch again since Donald Sutherland (Lucien) passed. RIP, Mr. Sutherland 😞It’s a hard movie to watch, but I do think everyone should watch it. Even with the controversy. There’s a life lesson in this great film.

Carol Rocha

“Percy Whetmore, do a dance…” 😂😅

Carol Rocha

It was a horrible act and I can definitely see my mind going to Jigsaw’s if I was in that position

SheisNicole💜

Love Samuel Jackson. Check him out in Rules of Engagement it’s another trial case movie staring him.

William Rice

The legal tactic that Jake ended up using is referred to as Jury Nullification. The Jury knew that Carl Lee was guilty as sin, but by giving him the insanity defense and everything that went along with it, being that both Doctors were debunked, Jake had to come up with a way for the jury to basically look the other way...any excuse to let Carl Lee go. It's not strictly legal, but it can be effective. I've seen it done on Law and Order a few times. Powerful movie! I have but one question...how do I get in on that cookout at the end?😁

Dan Gonya

Carl Lee let them off easy...I'd have gone Jigsaw on their asses, anyone touches my kid, uh uh...

Dan Gonya

One of the two redneck assholes from the beginning was played by the same guy who played Percy Whetmore in The Green Mile. Also BJ, you are correct about the actor playing Judge Noose being the LongShanks in Braveheart!

Dan Gonya

Father and son Kiefer and Donald Sutherland were in this movie together. Donald played the old drunk lawyer, teacher of Matthew McConaughey’s character and Kiefer played the angry blonde Klansman.

Cynthia M Farrington

That’s 30 years ago, not present day lmao

ButtcheeksBrown

One of my favs. Y’all should do Black Snake Moan! Another SLJ classic 😊

Lola B

love that movie! Definitely a vote from me!

pkleo73

Second all of these. Also, "The Client", another Grisham-based movie. I think Matthew McConaughey is a very underrated actor. Another movie he was particularly good in from this era is "Contact" with Jodie Foster. That would be a good one to react too, also.

Singing Wordwright

The movie is set in the present day, so the mid-90s. (Present day of when the movie was made that is.)

Brandon Richard

How has anyone never heard of this movie? One of the biggest casts of the 90’s. Love this film.

brooke atkins

Since BJ likes courtroom drama, you should watch The Rainmaker with Matt Damon, Philadelphia with Denzel and Tom Hanks and Erin Brockovich with Julia Roberts

Tara

Never heard of this one. Really well done. I wish you would do a reaction to The Hurricane with Denzel Washington. Amazing movie and true story. One of my all time favorites. The ending makes me tear up every time.

Dan Gershgol

OOH 😮 idk if I can watch this again! It’s an amazing movie but it really got to me…I cried like a baby during that part with the young girl! HOW BOUT SHITTS CREEK!! ✌🏻☀️😀

Goldie Schooch

Doug Hutchinson’s best scumbag role was real life when he married Courtney Stodden when she was 16.

Melissa

Lol,I'm surprised you could understand what I was saying with all my spelling errors🤣🤣

Rhonda Turner

Fans of this film if you want to hear a good and funny podcast about it The Ringer just posted a new Rewatchables episode about this film. Its a great podcast about films the whole ringervese is pretty awesome.

Rio Mendoza

Great film, great reaction. It has a special place in my heart because it was the last film I saw in theaters with my grandpa before he died. If you want another compelling legal drama from that era with great performances and writing, you've got to check out A Few Good Men.

Jimmie V

Yes BJ, the judge is the same actor who played the King of England (Longshanks) in “Braveheart.” Actor Patrick McGoohan. And one of the two scum bags Samuel L Jackson killed was played by Doug Hutchinson. The same actor who played the total #@*#head guard character Percy Wetmore, in the film “The Green Mile” yo.👍

Jesse

Yes! The Rainmaker. Great suggestion.

Melissa

This is such a powerful movie….great reaction…ugh…I could really feel your emotions…hard to watch in some ways…I know I was balling…y’all should check out Mississippi Burning … and in a different genre please start watching the Ashley Judd and Morgan Freemon movies…Ashley Judd plays the wife in A time to Kill…she has 3-4 suspense thrillers I think you guys would love…Kiss The Girls, Along Came a Spider and Double Jeopardy..there’s another one I can’t think of at the moment but I think you’ll love her movies…

Nuthin Good at 4

Yes .. yes ... Yes ... This goes along with first I thought Mississippi Burning .. true.. then I thought along with "Biko life iof Steven Biko)" n Mandela ... Yes ! By the end I thought also 😭 Sounds of freedom" it's a tough movie buy awareness starts the healing please see it or what you can on Utube if you can't see the theater... Especially about trafficking of kids .. I look back and now see why my moma kept me to protected until the day she died... Sadly she left in 89 ... It took my until the past few years to fully understand that's why she did... Innocence is so important for kids but mid to late teens is time for growing up ... We learn boundaries n right vs wrong as kids sometimes kids don't get that protection ... Sad ... God bless take care .. from the retired moma in the corner saying ❤️🔥 sending much Love guys n gals 🥰🔥

PatiMeltz

The movie mentioned with Matt Damon is The Rainmaker.

Tracy Smith

You are right BJ, this movie was not "enjoyable," but what it was, was important. It's the kind of movie we should all watch and talk about. Btw, there's another movie, along the same vein based on a book by the same author (John Grisham) - I think it's starring Matt damon and Danny DeVitp (I think, lol). It's equally amazing amd so cool... Thanks as always you two!

Rhonda Turner

8 episodes* but otherwise I totally agree

Ryan McKenna

That would be revenge.

Rockstar

If you guys like The south/court drama/ murder mystery/ Matthew McConaughey and Woodey Harrelson. I Highly recommend True Detective one HBO. It's breaking bad quality Its 1 season 10 Episodes from start to finish. Mini series Crime series.

TinCan Cosmanaut

I think this movie should have ended 20m in. Samuel shoots the rapists then the police let him go. Justice served.

TinCan Cosmanaut

Completely understandable! There is still a lot of hate in the world, in the states, today. I truly believe though that love and compassion will always win! It has to.

Bonnie Smith

Its been a long time since I've seen this film. Within the first couple minutes right now, all the feels came back - heart beating a little quicker knowing what was about to be shown/happen. Definitely a film I'll never forget how I felt watching for the first time. Even as a kid in the 90s.

Bonnie Smith

I watched this film when it first came out and the significance of its message has not dimmed with time. Thanks for your review. For another excellent (I would argue the best) legal drama, I suggest 12 Angry Men if you haven't seen it already. The original black and white version.

madgirlworld

I saw this in the theater multiple times when it came out (it was our first time seeing Matthew on screen and we were teenagers before the Internet was a thing) and it remains a favorite of mine. Of course now that I have a daughter who’s about that age, it was harder to watch than the last time I saw it. Thanks for doing this one!

Melissa

Hey! Love you guys and I was just thinking since BJ has a Wire shirt in the Master of Puppets video, instead of me pushing that (and The Usual Suspects), something outside the box that would be really cool would be Ken Burns' documentary, The Civil War. It swept the nation when it came out is so incredibly poignant and powerful, every American should see it, and we, as society, slept in passing it down. Especially in today's climate, I think if it had a resurgence, could change the national conversation. ....of course, I may or may not have dabbled with the devil's lettuce, so take it with a grain of salt 😄

Dan Rosen

I'll suggest from McConaughey Free State Of Jones(2016) which takes place during the Civil War Era. Also u need to watch To Kill A Mockingbird(1962), same story but a different time period.

Lewsifer

Amazing movie. You're right. He committed a crime; however, his plea was Not Guilty by reason of insanity. He won because Jake convinced the jury that a man could be out of his reasonable mind in the moment to commit the crime he committed.

LynnC

Very well said

Shannon

No doubt about it !! If the parents of this world could do what he had the courage to do, maybe people would think twice before they hurt a child !

Michele G

I so love this movie !! I remember going to the theater to see this in high school, me and my best friend. We went to see Matthew and left crying with a deep message that has never left me and a love for Samuel L Jackson. This movie always has a special place in my heart.

Michele G

You must be from Alabama 😂 I am too and I sooooo wanted to drive up there and stalk him !! He also filmed a movie in my town a few years ago. I did drive around and try to find him but I couldn’t 😂 i love him 😍

Michele G

He is good at bein a bad guy because he is actually a very bad person.

GQubed

have seen this before but its been awhile. Getting into it! Kevin Spacey was in Seven. And Usual Suspects. Also you have to watch American Beauty.

pkleo73

I have seen this movie so many times. But thus message NEVER gets old!!

Lovaire Hawkins

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, a time to reap that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal…” Though it’s not in the lyrics from the famous song by The Byrds, the title “A Time to Kill” comes from the Bible verse that inspired it above. That is what the heart of this movie is, as Asia said, seeing with your heart and not with your mind. We know that killing those two men was legally wrong, as the law is very black and white. Our hearts are not black and white though. I don’t believe morality to be strictly black and white either. There is sometimes a gulf between what is fair and what is just. And our legal system can lean heavily toward a lack of compassion especially when it comes to people of color. The jury unfortunately needed the full weight and horror of that crime to look beyond the law and find their hearts. Thank you for choosing to watch this one, it’s not easy, but it makes you think and feel. And it stays with you. ✨💕✌️

Miss Melissa

I'm so glad y'all reacted to this! I cry every time I see it. Definitely one of my favorites.

Rita Bickford

You guys are awesome in your movie selections. A Time to Kill is a top 5 movie for me.

Russ

The old lawyer is the real life father of the white guy who went and found the KKK. Donald Sutherland and Keifer Sutherland.

Jesse McAdams

Such a good movie. Saw in theater back during release. I was into Grisham novels and read a bunch including this one

Squ33ky

Great reaction A&B!! Excellent movie.

Dan63

Such a great film. As a father, this one cuts deep. 2 best movie courtroom scenes is this and A Few Good Men.

Drewcliff82

A Few Good Men. If you didn't do it already. And that older doctor that was convicted of statutory rape was convicted in 1960 at the age of 23. He looked to be mid 60s, but I think he's meant to be mid 50s. Which would put the date of the movie setting early to mid 90s.

Amy Silknitter

Seen this so many times. I can’t lie I just watched the major parts. I can’t sit through this whole thing, not when there’s still people seeking our people out at stores and malls and churches to hurt us, and politicians and those who vote for them that don’t care and are openly showing it. I hate being angry

All See’er

Such a great film (and a great book too). BJ was right. The judge is the same actor who played the King in Braveheart. I cry every time I see this movie…it’s so well done. A Few Good Men is another great courtroom drama with an all star cast of you like court case movies.

Mary Merry Berry

A bit controversially, it was 2 white girls (16 and 12) that were raped and beaten by 2 black men in real life that inspired this story. That combined with a case Grisham heard in law school of 2 white men that got little punishment for a race crime.

JennaB

This movie was based on the 1989 book by John Grisham. He is a lawyer turned author and his law expertise certainly contributes to his work. All of his novels end up on the NYT best sellers list. As many times as I see this film, I always 1) cry, 2) agree that the father could not have done anything else but what he did, 3) the evil that lives in this country has no skin color, 4) we must raise our children with morals and standards, it all starts at home.

Rose Dallman

This is from the John Grisham novel of the same name. John Grisham is a lawyer who has written several books all dealing with different aspects of court room drama. The Firm, The Rainmaker, The Client, Runaway Jury, and The Pelican Brief were movies made from his books.

Larry Smith

Who happens to be a POS in real life too. Married a 16 year old when he was over 50. 🤢

JennaB

Matthew McConaughey was 7 minutes away from me on June 29th filming scenes from a movie at our elementary school. My nephew was in town hanging out with his friends, and did not call me. I think I should disown him. 🤬

Heather McCullough (Beantoes12)

This is a Deep One! Far and away the best movie in the poll. Glad Yal ignored the results!

The Cool Uncle A.K.A. Uncle Beatle

Another great movie lost with time to me. Can't wait to jump back in and see the reactions! Movie night tonight. Hope everyone has a fun and safe weekend ✌❤ A&B fam!

Darth Brooks

Death Proof

Crispin

Also, neeeever noticed this before, but the lawyer's drunk mentor? That's the older Donald Sutherland, and the brother of the KKK dudes with that ratty haircut who is the main racist is his son, Keifer Sutherland. Kinda cool that there's a sutherland acting on the wrong and right side. Wonder what those moments were like between filming lol.

Potato Jones

The smaller piece of shit is the same actor that plays Percy in the Green Mile.

Wendy Garner

Every father on this planet would be in Samuel's shoes if someone did that to thier daughter. Black or white we would all expect to end up in prison for killing anyone for putting hands on my little child like that. It goes to the core of human nature of man to protect your offspring.

BOOMSTICK

They really are back like they never left cause they stay uploading. Love these guys nobody comes close to this amount of content. GOAT

Rio Mendoza

I saw this as a kid and it was the reason I wanted to be a lawyer. Didn't quit pull that off, but this movie will be legendary for pulling me off my tonka trucks and dream of becoming a construction worker

Potato Jones

Excited for this one!

Travysaurus Rex

Been doing the hard work of Mental Health rebuilding after a bad relationship and you guys are my well earned treat and escape. SO grateful TRULY for your Energy and sharing it with US. <3

JessicaB

One of the best films ever made. The ending always makes me cry! Thank you Asia and BJ! So glad you've reacted to this hard hitting, amazing, gem of a movie.

SilverDoe🎔

Haven't watched this in a long time. Let's go! Kiefer Sutherland plays such a good bad guy. He was in another movie with Sally Field called Eye for an Eye (1996) that was really good. Another heavy one though.

Brenda Galvez

Love this movie so glad you had a chance to watch it. thanks guys. I will watch right now of course.

Rio Mendoza

Oh hell yes! I love to watch reactions to this movie. Hard subject matter but incredible movie with great performances.

Michael Lynch

I am so flipping excited. I can’t wait to get home in a few hours! This is an excellent movie.

Amy Silknitter

Yesssss I haven't seen this in a while great choice 😍
