It was a reminder of his obligations to the men. He had to sacrifice his cousin for the other men so they wouldn't go to war.

She has never been very bright and she truly believed that Chris would go away with her and leave that life behind.

The owner of the property had retired and moved to florida with his daughter and the place was empty waiting to be sold. That is why Tony told Christopher to take care of Tonys body and bury it elsewhere.
