Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

Comments

I watched this one at Disney World before Star Wars was owned by Disney. I happened to be there when the movie came out and watched it a theater there.

Kinji

Yea, I remember Pizza Hut promoting this movie, back when pizza hut had a salad bar. We went to Pizza hut first then to the movie. Darth Maul has to be my favorite villain in Star Wars.

Saints_Madness

The only movie Samuel L Jackson doesn't drop a F bomb.

Jesse McAdams

Fanny as fuck reaction lol

Gustav

I know im late watching this reaction but mannnnnn BJ you made me spit up my drink when you said that the little anakin dont look dangerous lol i was like ohhh lawddd lol but yes im so looking forward too seeing attack of the clones and revenge of the sith with you and asia its going to be FUN!!!!!

Chris Smith

Was pretty funny watching the light bulb come on for you with the Anakin thing.. glad you got it at the very end

Squ33ky

Revenge of the Sith is the ultimate payoff for investing your time to watch 6 movies. I’m excited for you guys to get there.

donald oswald

Now that you guys know this was a prequel I can’t wait til you see episode 2! Remember Obie wan told Luke that he fought with his father in the clone wars

Peter Ortiz

its always better to watch the originals, because the third episode hit wayyy harder

Crispin

Original Trilogy: The Redemption of Darth Vader Prequel Trilogy: The Tragedy of Anakin Skywalker LesGO

J Lawrence

Me too!

Joanie Archetto

You guys are watching them in release order, which is the suggested way to watch them, but technically they were released in the order of 4,5,6 and then 1,2,and 3 came later in life. They released it in that order for a few reasons. But if you watch them in numbered order you'll end up watching it in chronological order, but you'll ruin a couple/ few surprises, as well as lose a LOT of quality. since the 1970s movies were just absolutely puppet shows compared to the CGI of number 2 and 3. So one of the main reasons people say to watch them in this order is because production value and special effects (lightsaber fights) get better and better as the time progressed.

Jonah Bertorelli

You guys watch SOO many movies, and shows I really don't blame you for not remembering everything like most people might. Not only that, but ya'll spend half the time commentating about the movie, and talking so of course naturally you'll miss or forget some things. Don't take it too hard when the super fans bitch about you not knowing stuff from the original movies and not knowing this was a prequal off rip. Makes for some fun content to consume when you're not a star wars super stan. lol

Jonah Bertorelli

Don't worry BJ I cracked up at your Alf joke. I'm sorry Asia didn't get it because that was a GOOD ONE! lmao I had a good laugh.

Jonah Bertorelli

I was screaming too lol. Love ya all but these are prequels so the next 3 movies take place before the other one's you've watched:)

Nicky the Greek

Hey now lol Im one of those Star Wars fans and I promise we’re not all like that. Just that loud vocal minority that like to ruin it for everyone else.

Ashly Vader

It’s not often us Star Wars fans get to watch others watch them without at least knowing Darth Vaders tale. So that’s awesome! It was fun watching you guys trying to figure it out.

Ashly Vader

As Bruce Lee might have said, "Screens don't answer back" 😂

MikeyG

They already watched the “original trilogy”, and would have heard the name Emperor Palpatine”, just as they heard Senator Palpatine’s name in this movie. I don’t see it so much as “spoilers”, but rather clues they should have already put together, like how Asia figured out that this was a prequel movie. If they had watched the movies in order, starting with this one, I obviously wouldn’t give them any hints or clues to what’s coming.

Bryan Sproles

Why would you give spoilers to them? Sure, it might seem obvious to some, but as they didn't mention it I doubt they knew.

Michael Paddon

Oof the Star Wars fan are extremely unstable. Good luck with this franchise. They are borderline evil and very unreasonable. Just look at them. All they have is Star Wars so they get delusional

Rockstar

Maaan , i must have screamed ”its a prequel” 10 times to the screen

SubZero

Star Wars movies are not in order, this is Annakin before he becomes Darth Vader.

Guys, you are right. I should not have commented at all. I’m going through some stuff and have been exercising poor judgment and impulse control. I’m sorry for being so negative on here.

Cynthia M Farrington

Had to post again as first post was right at start of movie. At 56 minutes now. I was laughing and shouting at screen as neither of them realised it is a prequel and Ani is Darth Vader and Luke's father. Can't wait to see if they get it before end of movie. To funny, thanks guys for his reaction. ANd Asia kudos for spotting the name and wracking your brain for where you knew it from. I was half expecting you to goggle it just to stop it nagging you. :)

Michael Paddon

I started laughing right from start. Asia confusing Star Trek and Star Wars and BJ repeatedly calling the movie by the wrong name, even if close to right. This is going to go well I thought. lol Fun reaction as always though. :D

Michael Paddon

I am so proud of you for figuring out this was a prequel, Asia! I'll even overlook that mixing up Star Wars and Star Trek. LOL! And the name BJ was trying to think of was Jabba the Hutt (the booger worm) and the Sith that killed Qui-gon was Darth Maul (I met the martial artist/actor that played him many years ago.....really nice guy and amazing martial artist). Now you gotta watch the next two so you will see Anakin's journey. They didn't say it in this episode, but Samuel L Jackson's character is named Mace Windu.

Chris Marrero

The one piece you guys missed to tell you what time period this was in...when they introduced Obi-Wan Kenobi as a young man. In the "original" trilogy (#4, 5 and 6), we met Kenobi as an old man, and he knew Luke's father...because it's Anakin Skywalker. The part about Yoda saying "there is another...", he was referring to Princess Leia being Luke's sister. Darth Maul was the character who killed Qui-Gon Jinn, and was killed by Obi-Wan. When Yoda said there are always 2 Siths, never more or less, Darth Maul was the apprentice to Emperor Palpatine. If you noticed after Yoda said that, they panned the camera over to Senator...Palpatine.

Bryan Sproles

After you finish these three movies, you gotta see the three part Star Wars Robot Chicken specials. They are money.

Michael King

I actually really feel bad for Jake. That’s not fair, especially for a kid. It’s terrible what it did to him. RIP. For years I thought Hayden Christensen was terrible, but time and context have really set things straight. I hate his career was affected, because he is a truly decent person and he actually did do a great job. ESPECIALLY in obi wan.

Michael King

They went into this assuming it was a sequel, that’s it. This was the first real instance of a huge franchise having prequels after such a long time from the original content. Probably the first time of having notable prequels of any film. If they had known ahead of time, it would be nothing, now that they know, it’s like a blinder is lifted. It’s like a key to an encryption. It all makes sense when you consider that one small piece. That this happens 20 years or so before the “first” Star Wars A New Hope. The first movie filmed, by that I mean that the final film of the trilogy #3, happens roughly 20 years before #4, the first Star Wars movie.

Michael King

The most interesting thing about that is they basically developed all that lore just to explain why Sam Jackson’s lightsaber was purple. A mix of red and blue. He just wanted to be able to find himself on the battlefield when he watched it back. Plus he’s a BAD M’FER, which he has inscribed on his hilt.

Michael King

Man, I’m pretty laid back with people on this stuff, but that intro had my head veins throbbing, lol.

Michael King

Because Sam Jackson's "Mace Windu" by far is my favorite Jedi, a little background on his character is that he is a practitioner of what is called Vaapad, which is an extension of Form VII Juyo (Not that I expect you to know what any of that is.) Each Jedi practices a form that best suits their character such as offensive/defensive styles. Some only master/specialize in one style while few others master more than one or even all. Darth Maul (the devil looking sith) was a practitioner of Juyo, to give you perspective. While his was more martial artsy lol, Juyo is really just a very aggressive style that can tire the user fast so usually they try to take out their opponents as fast as possible. What makes Mace Windu (Sam Jackson) stand out is that he developed his own style based on Juyo called Vaapad. This variation allows the practitioner to channel their own dark side energy to become more aggressive in battle, and as a plus, allows the user to channel the dark energy of any dark side opponent and use it against them. No other Jedi even Yoda would attempt this because it is a direct channel to the dark side and can push you over if you aren't careful. In other off media, Mace was known to of only trained one other in his style and that apprentice went crazy and over to the dark side, so Mace won't take on any other apprentices. What's funny is that when you all said Samuel L Jackson is in this??? I was like yeah he in everything lmao! I know it's another paragraph from another SW's fan but just my 2cents. And great catch at the end, George Lucus when the first StarWars movie came out didn't know if it would be successful, so he took what he thought would be the best parts of everything he wrote and pushed them into the OT. Then after its massive success, he had to back track and rewrite/include the rest turning them into episodes. Welcome to the Prequel Trilogy.

Clockwork360

Oof, I have a lot to say to the people who shit on the prequels. But it’s just not worth it. I used to be in the same camp. Some of the acting bugged me. But George Lucas himself pointed out part of the fun of Star Wars is it’s full of cheesy lines. ESPECIALLY THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY. I came to appreciate the cohesive well thought out story over 3 films which the sequels lacked, among other things. It’s an awesome story and why Anakin is the greatest character in all of Star Wars. I have something that everyone should watch EXCEPT ASIA AND BJ FOR NOW. https://youtu.be/pJvm5VXzJpg This is one of the greatest things you’ll ever see if you’re a true Star Wars fan. AGAIN ASIA AND BJ DONT WATCH THIS THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS!

Michael King

Haven't watched the reaction yet just reading the comments, but ALF could be referring to an old TV sitcom called ALF or (Alien Life Form) from back in the 90's. It's the first thing I thought of when reading your comment, but I could be off. I'll post back in a few hours

Clockwork360

Back on the StarWars ok, let's get it

Clockwork360

Cheer up sausage

Rob Dog

Aaand....here we go down the never-ending path of the mediocre Star Wars universe. I like Star Wars movies; I was 10 yrs. old and saw Ep. 4 at the drive-in the year it came out. Unfortunately, the rabid fans will insist on watching everything associated and take over the polls, leading to watching every boring ass series Disney pumps out to take advantage of their addiction. That is the way.

TheGuy

No way. You must be older cause the people that were young when the prequels were released. Love all of them. I'm 42 and I love all six of them. Some more than others, but they're not all entirely terrible except for maybe clones

Rio Mendoza

I was chewing my nails, until Asia's eyes lit up like oh I know! That was great!

Tonio

since they watch TV on this channel too, that's a great idea

Karl Kraus

Hey I’m hoping you guys watch the series “the mandalorian” the timeline for this series happens after Return of the Jedi

Sharon Bushie

I am glad you figured it out. I WAS literally yelling at my phone. Samuel L Jackson plays a bigger role in episodes 2 and 3. The Darth Maul fight is the redeeming part of Episode 1. 2 and 3 are much better. I dont like the overuse of CGI in episode 1. Does not even look like a star wars movie. Looks like a final fantasy game. My hate for Jar Jar runs deep.

Dan Gershgol

Her figuring it all out as they roll the ending credits...I feel like she's trolling us lol. Trying to get all the Star Wars superfans to start writing up their 22 paragraph explanations. "Who's that, Luke Skywalker's brother Darth Vader Jr?"

CS

Watching Asia figure out these are prequels is worth the price of subscription. LOVE IT 😊

Karim

I stood up in the theatre to bail on this disappointment but sat back down just to finish it. I warmed up to episode II and III. Fast forward to these last three Disney Pieces of trash and I greatly appreciate episodes II and III more today. This one still stinks imo but it gets better

Psoup

Cynthia M Farrington

Something to really understand these next 3 movies are prequels

melvin pierce

If you recall, the first episode ever made was Episode IV. You’re now watching Episode I, which is the first of the prequels.

David Croft-Ogawa

If you give away all the remaining plot details for the rest of the movies don’t you think they kinda ruins the remaining reactions. Smh

Scuba Steve

"Who is Alf?" ........wait.... WHAT??????? :-O

Athariel

Plot twist: Anakin isn't one of Darth Vader's kids... he is Darth Vader as a kid!! When Yoda told Luke that there was another child of Anakin's (Yoda did tell Luke that Anakin Skywalker was his father, and that Anakin *knew Darth Vader*... and Vader admits later that he is Luke's father), he was talking about Luke's twin sister. Those two are the only children of Vader's. Dark Maul, the scary red-black horned fella with the red dualsaber, is a Sith, the 'dark side' to the Jedi's 'light side' if you will. Darth Maul also does survive being cut in half, but you won't see him again in the live action movies. Samuel L. Jackson was "Mace Windu" one of the strongest Jedi ever!

Riley

I didn't see it mentioned, just thought I'd throw this out there: when Yoda mentioned to Obi-Wan that there was another when Luke abandoned his training, he was referring to his sister (Leia). No third child.

tkitez (take it easy)

Samuel L Jackson's character was Samuel L Jackson. I tried of these mother F***in snakes on this mother F***in space ship! Everybody buckle up I'm gonna open a F***in airlock! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 https://youtu.be/RFz41F3iUCA 1:52 for the context

shawn boyce

The gave jar jar hate because the way he talked. Just like the old racist looney tunes. Also the federation characters talked with Japanese/ English accents.

shawn boyce

The Jedi Council claimed Anakin to be too old to start training because his age breaks a big rule that the Order follows: all new inductees are to be admitted as young as possible So most are brought in as soon as they're born, some months later, even when they're toddlers this is a measure to make sure all younglings don't develop a strong form of attachment to family or other things Like you pointed out, Anakin's mother is starting to hold her son's training back because of his loneliness without her or something will keep him from seeing her again this will be a theme that recurs in this part of the story that will be SOOO important

Karl Kraus

Qui-Gon was played by Liam Neeson and he's in a movie I've suggested to you before and it's a MUST SEE: Schindler's List, a gut-wrenching true story of the Holocaust

Karl Kraus

And you guys didn't hate on Jar Jar ONCE! i'm really proud of that fact Ahmed Best, the man who played the character, was ridiculed for years afterward and thought about suicide at one point but has since been brought back into the fold as a celebrated member of the franchise Same goes for Jake Lloyd, Anakin's actor HE got it just as bad as Ahmed, if not more he was bullied by school classmates incessantly and it brought him into depression and made him into a schizophrenic he sold off everything he had that was Star Wars related, saying he wants nothing to do with it ever again, so his life has been a trainwreck You've now learned of this sad fact: this fandom has a dark side Ironic right? Since this franchise made its comeback back in 2015, there have been more characters and plot devices that have been undeservedly mocked, taunted, etc. so I'm happy to know you've moved to the right side of the street on that account

Karl Kraus

OKAY here goes my rant: As much as I liked you doing the math of the timeline throughout this movie (THERE IS NO THIRD SKYWALKER SIBLING), it wouldn't have been necessary if you did your research first, knowing that this and the other two after are the prequels to the original trilogy and having the characters from there (besides Han) in here that's why there are episodic numerics - numbers 4, 5 and 6 for the first three (in release order) and now this trilogy George Lucas, the creator of this magnificence, wanted to bring the audience in the MIDDLE of his universe first back in the 70s and 80s when the others came out and when the technology evolved enough in the 90s, he went ahead and started to make 1, 2 and 3 The Phantom Menace, BJ, can be interpreted as many things: the Emperor (or rather Darth Sidious as he was known here), Darth MAUL (Sidious' apprentice, the "Devil"), the Sith or the just the dark side in general and the Sith will be the archenemy of the trilogy Episode l takes place 32 years before Episode lV and Disney (who bought this series back in 2012) has labeled the prequel trilogy as "Fall of the Jedi" so now we can see how they got exterminated AND, as you pointed out Asia, how Anakin fell to the dark side and took on the name Darth Vader Anakin's fall is an engaging and tragic tale that's the story that encompasses Episodes l-Vl, Anakin Skywalker's life, his rise, his fall and his ultimate redemption You guys will be mulling things over ALOT when you finish this trilogy, I promise you that Here are some of the ages for characters: Obi-Wan is 25, so he was in his mid-50s when he mentored Luke; Anakin is only 9 years old here; R2-D2 (not RT-D2) and C-3PO (not 3-CPO) turned out to be family heirlooms of sorts since they've been around since Anakin's childhood (even before that since 3PO came from junk) and then served his children, Luke and Leia Yoda said he was 900 years old when he died in Return of the Jedi, so he's roughly 870 years old in this movie To compare, the children were 19 years old when we first meet them in Episode lV - a New Hope When we get to the next movie, Episode ll, we get to see Luke's aunt and uncle who raised him on Tatooine, named Owen and Beru There is another familar name coming up as well but I won't say what: spoilers and all that Another thing: since the planet name Tatooine was said once in the originals and seen once in the opening crawl text for Return of the Jedi, it wouldn't seem that familiar to anybody first watching this Tatooine is the same planet Luke grew up on, so there's another connection in the Skywalker family: Anakin and his son had the same mundane existence before they got pulled in by destiny This trilogy has the longest timeframe of the three (yes, there's ANOTHER trilogy, the sequels but worry about this one for now), which is 13 years 10 years will have passed when you watch Episode ll, so there is a lot of lore to digest here already Star Wars is NOT at Universal, but at Disney theme parks it was probably Disney World where you saw Darth Maul inside the grounds Samuel L. Jackson's character is named Mace Windu George just didn't get his name figured out yet when this was written; he's a badass and gangster Jedi, one of the most skilled ever; his lightsaber is even badass! You'll see him go to town in the next two I'm really excited for you to continue this story! Love you guys as always!

Karl Kraus

This was so fun getting to watch along with you two! The entire time "Anakin.. Anakin.. who is that?!" haha So fun. Wait until you watch the others / most recent ones! Great surprise tonight when I logged on. Jar Jar received so much hate back then. I believe even worst character or something. But he isn't so bad =) I felt bad for him getting so much hate lol

Bonnie Smith

Lol, wut? Revenge of the Sith is considered a masterpiece, in the general canon.

Michael King

All throughout you could see Asia's mind whirring the minute she heard ''Skywalker'' lol! Yes, Anakin created CP-30 You're right, it is the same droid. And yessss Asia's instincts were bang on regarding Anakin. Glad you guys figured out he's Vader. The guy that plays Darth Maul is kick ass in real life. He's from Glasgow and is an expert in Wushu, Kickboxing, Shaolin Kung Fu, Northern Shaolin. Loved your reaction, I was waiting for the tick tick boom! You didn't disappoint :)

SilverDoe🎔

All I can say about this movie is it's the least awful of the prequels. Hayden Christensen not being it is a major plus.

Mr Jackpots

welcome in!

Asia and BJ

I was waiting for you guys to figure it out😂😂😂😂 but Asia you’re smart, good job considering y’all new to Star Wars

Marc Cephas

Prequels Asia! This is episode one… 🤦🏻‍♂️😆

Carl 🐉

are you a simpleton? it was revealed in episode 5 and 6 that lukes father is named Anakin (they reacted to those movies already)

HeauxHalter

Maybe don't give that away bro

Rio Mendoza

Harry Potter and Star Wars?? 😁😁

Psiguy614_05

ANAKIN is LUKES FATHER aka Darth Vader, episdoe 1-3 is Anakin's origin story.

HeauxHalter

I don’t blame y’all for being confused, that’s why I wanted you guys to react to these while it was fresh! It was still so much fun and I hope you guys finish these sooner than later! (:

Anthony Jackson

2:11:03 Asia figures it out

TinCan Cosmanaut

A nice surprise tonight! :) I know it might be controversial, Please, don't throw me rocks, but I do appreciate Jar Jar for what he is. Whatever it is. :P

Hyperion

More asia than bj for me

Karl Kraus

Glad you figured it out! Sorry🤣❤

Rachel Sisk (Rayray)

Its a very young Obi One ya'll 🤣

Rachel Sisk (Rayray)

I loved watching Asia slowly piece together who Anakin was throughout the movie. It made it more interesting that you guys went into this movie without knowing that it was a prequel about Darth Vader.

Joseph

I agree with Rachel Sisk (above comment). I actually didn’t mind the prequels too much and still appreciate some of the scenes. But Jar Jar Binks…….hmm……could anyone help me find that ricin cigarette?

Jesse

OMG the Mr Plinkett reviews are better than the prequel trilogy itself. I’ve watch them multiple times just can’t stop laughing!! My favorite part is all the Attack of the clones parts with anakin/padme love story (awful of course) and how anakin is such a winner for bringing a corpse home, wanting a fascist dictatorship, and committing mass murder including women and children. That’s a real winner right there!! Lol

Lynda Olson

Nice!! I hate Jarjar but love all of these movies!!

Rachel Sisk (Rayray)

Watching Asia laugh at the ridiculousness my be my favorite part. I forget how goofy this movie can be

TinCan Cosmanaut

??? force awakens

rod1234

don't worry im in that party as well i grew up with the prequels

Karl Kraus

I can see not much background research went into this one 🤣 still enjoying the reaction tho

Jack

And people still like to complain!

Julie A

''Braces self for Jar Jar....'' lol

SilverDoe🎔

Admittedly I'm kind of curious to see what BJ thinks of JarJar

Greg Hoenig

Oh no. You two should check out Mr. Plinkett's review now that you've seen this.

tkitez (take it easy)

Let's go! Thank you for getting to this misunderstood trilogy!

Karl Kraus
