David Chase said, “That singing thing is about how all over the world people engage in pure sentimentality. Everyone loves a good cry. And I don’t mean to denigrate funerals or death. It also has something to do with entertainment, filmed entertainment. Music can be used so manipulatively. And Junior, who is the most selfish character in the cast, is pouring his heart out. Didn’t mean a thing. Just to wallow in the moment…Pop music is so abused and overused, manipulated and employed in the service of the devil. It was to give the audience a laugh about how they are being manipulated everyday.” I have no clue why David Chase thought people would pick up on that. Michael Imperioli (Christopher) even said he thought it was weird and had to look up what the meaning of it was before he started talking about that episode for his Talking Sopranos podcast.

I came from a military family and when the guy at the military school tells Carmela that the mothers seldom agree with hard-nosed discipline, I always say to myself “my mom did.” Tony hitting AJ I think was to show just how frustrated and scared he is for his son and he doesn’t know what to do. You’ll notice he’s often aggressive and verbally abusive but never lays a hand on them. Except for this one time. As for Jackie Jr., I always thought Ralphie was going to give him a pass until he found out that Jackie reached out to Tony and not him for guidance. You’ve already seen that Ralphie is a sicko, so something as petty as that would absolutely sway him to have him killed. Fun fact: the rest stop where Vito calls Ralphie to help him cut his meeting short is in Montvale, NJ. And they renamed it for James Gandolfini after he died.

The kids are bad because they have too much… too much mouth and too much freedom. Juniors singing is beautiful
