I know this is late but I’m just now getting around to it. Probably no one will see it. Just a little detail: the bamboo sticks aren’t bamboo. They’re called bokken (not shinai, which are the bamboo ones) and they are pretty heavy. They’re usually made of oak or some other dense hardwood and they HURT. Not just sting like bamboo. Swung with force they can break a bone and could probably kill a person

just responding to Asia @1:08, he did kill her husband. The husband was the samurai in the red armor, who said He is Mine, when the captain was surrounded by 6 warriors. The red samurai tried to stab him when he was down and the captain ran his broken spear through the red samurai's neck. So basically he killed her husband and now she is forced to take care of him and have her kids be around the man who killed her husband.

SO THE SCENE WHERE UJIO HAD TO BEAT HIM SENSELESS WITH THE BAMBOO STICKS, I ONCE HEARD THAT WAS VERY MEANINGFUL, EVIDENTLY IN THEIR CULTURE, HONOR COMES FROM BEING HUMBLE AND ACCEPTING DEFEAT AS THEY KEPT ELUDING TO THROUGHOUT THE FILM... HOWEVER... IN AMERICAN CULTURE, AS WE ALL KNOW, HONOR COMES FROM NEVER ACCEPTING DEFEAT N NEVER GIVING UP... THAT SCENE WAS MEANT TO SHOW THAT PARTICULAR CONTRAST IN THE 2 CULTURES... OR SO IVE HEARD...

Nathan was the one that killed her husband at the beginning with the flag pole when he stabbed him under the chin before being captured. That's why the dynamic between Nathan and the Japanese woman Taka was so awkward.

Not to take away from the movie but around 1:59:00 when Tom Cruise is getting of his horse, that horse kicks the extra next to it in the umm man parts. He was seriously injured but they kept the scene going as not many noticed the kick while shooting.

I'm so glad you guys got around to this film. It is definitely among my top 5, right alongside Gladiator. Another personal favorite of mine is "Blood Diamond" with Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Honsou. I'd place it right up there with the greats. Hopefully you guys get around to it someday!

Two other great epic war movies are Troy which is loosely based on the Iliad by homer great cast and the beach scene is simply the best ancient action scene ever. The second is kingdom of heaven set during the third crusade highly historically inaccurate about the only thing right was that it happens during the crusades but such a deep movie but for both movies watching the extended directors cut is a must just like lord of the rings it adds so much detail that would otherwise be missed

It’s been so long since I’ve seen this movie. I love dramas. They just don’t seem to make great movies like this anymore. All Hollywood seems to make these days are remakes and comic book characters.

One classic Japanese story about samurai goes like this:
Two samurai families get into a serious fight and need to duel to resolve it. The issue? One family isn't really doing the best on food -- the rice harvest wasn't strong for them. So the other family pitched in. They sent them a little extra to get them kinda at a similar footing so they could duke it out. Both sides needed to go into that fight equally healthy.
The idea of discipline towards combat to the point of self-sacrifice being important and respected as a cultural centerpiece is really trippy to me. It kinda reminds me of those rough people who find martial arts and it makes them clean up their act. Or a boxer who says they hope their opponent shows up to fight night in the best shape possible. It teaches that you can always keep your dignity, honor, and humanity intact even when doing something really scary and dangerous like combat. It also is really destructive too. It's honest violence, at least.
I wonder a bit, though, if that same thought process was responsible for the Japanese culture of combat sacrifice in WW2. This movie was 1876 and world war II was 1931 for the japanese (they were hungry so they wanted to take china). Thats a gap of 55 years -- it's like 2/3 generations away. And the end of this movie does end with a Japan that is still kind of figuring out its relationship with the old ways of bushido. The kamakaze attacks where pilots crashed into US destroyers as suicide bombers was really tied to that bushido way of thought -- I think to myself as I take another puff.
If y'all want something to put on for the boring road trips or cleaning up and want to hear some reaaaally cool stuff about this weird period of transition in Japan from 1867 up to world war 2, I highly recommend: https://www.dancarlin.com/product/hardcore-history-62-supernova-in-the-east-i/

Samurai have to much honor to stand the shame of defeat. It's an ritualistic suicide called "seppuku aka hara-kiri." The samurai will stab himself in the gut, while another will stand behind him called "Kaishakunin", and chop the head off, so they don't suffer in agony.

Great movie probably tom cruise best. Everything about this movie is amazing from the cinematography to the characters to the story. And the fact that they don't win the battle and come out victorious in that sense they won in the long run bcause they accomplished exactly what they wanted to do which was make the emperor hear them and realize that what his counselors was telling him to do wasn't best for the people of Japan. What Tom's character had a hard time understanding is how even after he killed Takas husband she still took care of him and her children still loved him and she accepted his apology.

It’s such a beautifully made film - such respect for the culture and the beauty of it and the tragedy of how so much of it was lost. I don’t think I could treat the wounds and detox of the man who killed my husband, but she did it with such grace.

I saw this movie on an airplane randomly once and it hit me hard. So much honor. I’m part Japanese and my grandmothers family goes back to the samurai. They ran all of Japan then the emporer didn’t need them anymore hooking up with the western world. The ninjas were the ones with no honor. They dressed like women and other disguises and used methods of deception.

Just got to scene where they cut off the Samurai's hair (top knot). That is a very big deal in Samurai culture as the top knot was not only functional in helping keep the helmet secure/stable, but also a symbol of a respected social stature. Cutting off a top knot was symbolic to ending the culture of the Samurai. Powerful and foreshadowing moment in the movie.

Harakiri (I may have spelled that wrong) was the punishment/honorable way to die if you had committed an unforgivable act against your tribe/community. This practice of disembowelment wasn't banned until the 90s. Crazy huh? Seppuku (sp) was considered a merciful ritual to behead the person preforming harakiri. Preventing a longer, more painful death. I noticed in the movie that they fully cut the head off but, if my memory is correct, they're supposed to stop before the person is completely beheaded, which takes great skill and it was an honor to be selected to perform this ritual.

Excited about this reaction. I spent 12 years training in Japanese martial arts, mostly focused on Samurai sword movements. Tom Cruise spent 2 years training for this film and I'm a little jealous that his movements probably look better than mine. 😏🤣 Cruise gets full respect from me on this film. He also refused to be paid before the film was completed.
