That struck me. That generation of heroes is absolutely legendary. I know because I'm lucky enough to be related to more than one of them. Yes, their generation is the reason we have so much of what we do now, but part of what made them the greatest is their humility. On an unrelated note: It's a little funny to me that you felt the need to put down this current generation by saying they couldn't or wouldn't do the same. A) many of us have joined the military, our country has been at war for the majority of our lives and this generation has lost and sacrificed as well b) we don't use the draft system anymore so as you said yourself MOST of the Greatest Generation wouldn't have gone if they had a different system at the time. A larger percentage of the current U.S. military is there voluntarily (100%) than there was during WWII (38.8%). The point is, respectfully, you can praise a generation and their sacrifices and bravery WITHOUT also speaking about another generation. We owe more respect to those men and to this subject than to throw in something so unnecessary like that. ***Sorry this got long, I mean no disrespect, I just get really really passionate about WWII but also about generational sniping (on either side of the millennial barrier)***

There is a reason why this generation is called the Greatest Generation. They stepped up and did what was needed. It was bigger than themselves. Most were drafted and some enlisted after Pearl Harbor. I highly doubt the current generation would/could do the same today.

Well done for getting through this episode guys. I watch BoBs every year…..it’s that special and episode 6 is the hardest to watch. On occasion I have skipped episode 6 when rewatching. It’s just incredible what these guys went through so we could enjoy all the creature comforts we have now

I really feel what you are saying. What these men did and endured is truly amazing and heroic. This is why we Stand for the National Anthem and show respect for our flag.

You know what make this so immersive for me? NO MUSIC. It's just silent... even the footsteps are loud, then once you get used to that, bombs start going off all of a sudden. It makes you feel more what the soldiers were feeling back then. Silence for hours, then the worst sounds in the world when you weren't expecting them.

The cold and swirling snow and fog affected the Germans also. That is why troops on both sides would frequently wander into each others positions. I think someone already mentioned about the nurse being called the angel of Bastogne. Saved many lives and then lost her own.

Someday you'll want to watch, "Patton," the General mentioned at the end of this episode. It's a classic about this time in WWII. It was made in 1970, so it doesn't have the gore of modern war movies.

Asia, I know this is tough to watch, but it’s worth it. I feel the same way, if I’m down or bothered by something, I remember what these people went through and I know I’ve got nothing to complain about. By the end you both will feel like you’re a part of Easy Company.
That winter was the coldest winter in centuries for Europe. The Dutch called it the Starving Times, having to dig up tulip bulbs and eat them. The ground was frozen, so the dead were stacked outside to freeze too.
The Germans had only enough fuel for their tanks for up to three days. The plan was to blitzkrieg through and seize Allied fuel depots to continue their advance. They managed to capture some fuel but many retreating Allied troops blew up fuel depots and whatever they couldn’t take with them, ultimately depriving the Germans of the necessary resources to continue. So there was a siege lasting five weeks, and you saw what that was like.
That first scene with Doc Roe finding those frozen bodies in the snow reminded me of the first episode of Game of Thrones. 🥶

just think. We can watch this for 1 hour and then go to a comfortable bed and warm house, while the people that were there had no timeout to recover. no wonder so many broke down mentally and physically.

weapons had to be regularly cycled or they would freeze up. Even well lubricated rifles would stick and jam. The cleaning oil they had was too thick and would freeze.

Asia and BJ - thank you for reacting to this series... it is one of my favourites. I have loved your reaction and your insight as to how you interpret what you are seeing in the story unfolding for you. Keep going and push on - you will be glad you did. Thank you once again.

And this my friends is why we need men. THIS! I can’t tell you how sick I am of todays society bashing men. The constant putting down and shaming. Saying men need to not have toxic masculinity, stop man spreading, stop mansplaining, talking dirty or being macho or just telling them what to do, what to say, how to be and on and on. Sick of it. Men need to be men. We need men. And these men were no chumps. They gave their lives for us and did it tough, without whining and with honor. I never take that for granted. God bless them all.

If this episode was hard to handle, you might want to just skip ahead to the last episode. This series was done really well. As a result, it will get to you. The last few episodes are going to be really hard to take.

Asia I can hardly watch it either but then again I think everyone should have to. We owe so much to our military. I have never been eager to watch war movies. I watched Fury with my son and it was very good I think you would like it. Brad Pitt stars in it. Love y'all thanks for the great content.

German 88s (8.8 CM anti-tank/anti-air artillery) had an effective range of almost 10 miles. So in answer to BJ's question, the rounds that were exploding on them were coming from the surrounding towns and villages that the Germans were occupying, namely the village of Foy.

I watch this show every 5 years or so.
I am Belgian and my grandparents were born in 1923 and 1929, they were young during the occupation and the ww2
but they had so many things to tell about this(my grandfather died in 2016)
If the allies hadn't come to free us I would never have been born

Awesome reactions so far. You're tearing through them so fast, you might want to consider reacting to 'The Pacific' right after as it is the same kind of show made by the same people, but it deals with the conflict in Japan rather than Germany during WW2.

It wasn't a debrief. The priest was giving them absolution. If you look close you can see it was the same priest who was praying over the dead while under fire in the episode with Blithe.

The full story of the nurse is even more heart breaking than shown in the show. When the aide station was hit she rescued 6 soldiers from the rubble, but died when she went back in for the seventh. She was known as the Angel of Bastogne.

The Belgian nurse is Renée Lemaire. She was killed during a German air raid on Christmas Eve in 1944. The other one is Augusta Chiwy, she passed away in 2015 aged 94.

My Dad was too, he ran away at 16 and lied about his age after Germany surrendered. By the time he made it to the Philippines, Japan surrendered, so he was part of the occupation force. He did serve in the Korean War.

My dad was airborne 187th Rakassan in Korean War. He was 19 years old. He said if it weren't for the WW2 vets many more younger soldiers would have been wounded or worse. Thanks again for doing this series justice as you watch.
