2023-03-11 03:49:29 +0000 UTCThat final scene in episode 9 is one of my favorites of the entire series - Tony telling Carmella he didn't hurt nobody. Dr. Melfi asks Tony why he feels responsible and why he feels he needs to set things right. The answer is because Tony can. He has the power, and that makes him feel responsible. Having this power to set things right weighs on him, and sometimes he's torn by these decisions as in episode 9. You can tell, leading up to the scene before the arrest of the coach. He throws a glass against the wall when Arty leaves, he slams a pool ball down on the table, and you can tell he's anguishing over this decision - to use his power to set things right or be passive. This actually hurts him, and he drinks and uses pills to avoid the stress and anxiety that these decisions cause within him. He isn't sure what's right, and this causes him a lot of suffering and anxiety. It's a funny scene because Tony is completely drunk, and we're not expecting this. But it's also a very weighty and serious scene because Tony is obviously self-medicating and at the same time looking to Carmella for approval for the decision he's made because he isn't sure of himself but fully realizes the weight of his decision. This scene is a great example of why The Sopranos is such a masterpiece.

I'm no fan of the "ridiculous " comedies like Austin Powers (example) no am I a fan of sappy sweet "chick flicks.
