Yea, that's another good movie. There are still a few more movies that are still in your reaction list that I'm catching up with. Well, glad Asia finally was able to finish the film. Her demeaner changed from the beginning and then coming to the end, she had the look of death in her eyes, destroy them Nazi's. And BJ's on point with the interpretation of what's going on in a film. Asia's on point when something is about to happen. You 2 are a perfect at reacting to these films. I could see you actually being a professional film critic. There are 4 that are in the same genre that are good. American Sniper, Enemy at the gates, Tears of the sun, and Windtalkers.
I think this was one of those movies that came out that was actually really gory in the theaters and then others finally started to get to that level. Most movies were not that bad but this was one that made the Motion Picture Association film rating system ease up on allowing this level of gore to be acceptable for viewing.

Thank you guys SO much for watching this film! I truly believe that this film is the greatest ever made. And as Asia said, it's a lot! Watching it takes an emotional toll, especially if you're an American. The D-Day battlefield is in Normandy, France, which is a giant graveyard now. That's the graveyard in the movie. There were 5 beaches that were invaded. The Americans were responsible for Omaha and Utah beach and took the brunt of the German resistance on that day. My parents visited it, it's kept in impeccable shape out of respect, all paid for by the French government. If a bird poops on one of those crosses, best believe there is someone to clean it within minutes. It's a very solemn and quiet place.

You probably figured this out by now but the German soldier who kills Melisch with the knife was a different guy than the German soldier they let go. The guy they let go was however the one who shot Capt Miller. They looked similar and I thought the same thing the first time I saw it.

Just to point out Montgomery the British general they criticise held off 400 German tanks around Caen with the Battle for that city costing 30000 British and Canadian troops dead and double that wounded , Caen is only 6 miles from the landing beaches I visit every year and am humbled by the 10 minute drive I have from the coast . On Omaha Beach 2400 Americans died , in fact the beach landings had significantly lower casualties than anticipated, the subsequent fighting on the Cotentin peninsula where they fought field by field cost way more dead and injured . Incredible to think that anyone escaped from the beaches , one thing that they did was send raw troops onto the beaches first knowing that seasoned troops who had landed in Africa Sicily and Italy would and could not fight as effectively because they knew the Hell that lay ahead .

One of the hardest movies Spielberg has done - with the exception of Schindler's list. I'd say if you were going to do Ryan, you should try and do Schindler's List. It makes me bawl like a baby, so it might not make for great content. But it's certainly worth watching.

The Captain not wanting the others to see him cry was not about pride (not looking weak). Remember how they said he didn't have a mother, he was assembled at officer training? He's the leader who has to order them into deadly situations. He has to be their rock. They can go on and do all the hard things they do, because he sets the ultimate example.

1998 was a great year for war films! It is not a genre I watch, but went with a friend to see it at the theater. The Thin Red Line is the other war movie that came out around the same time with a star studded cast as well. Both were brilliantly filmed and IMO the two most "perfect" war films to date. SPR is done in a more straight forward Hollywood style and TTRL is a more poetic alternative style from multiple soldier's perspectives in the same war, which at times can be confusing, but that's intentional. Soldier's don't always know what is going on or what lies ahead. There are scenes without subtitles, so you don't know what is being said, but in reality that's what happened... you know just as much as the soldier did in that particular scene. Anyhow, I would love to see you react to The Thin Red Line too. Again, I'm not a war movie watcher, but TTRL is in my top 5 movies of all time. It has a cult following. SPR is equally great, but I personally prefer TTRL because of the filmmaker's visual choices with foreshadowing (birds and nature) and portraying each human POV with only the information they had realistically. You get to see things through different lenses that I haven't seen in any other film.

Omaha Beach Was One Of Five Beaches The Allies Stormed On June 6th 1944 D-Day The Invasion Of France. It Was The Bloodiest Of The Five Beaches With Over 2,400 American Casualties.
The Knife Was A Hitler Youth Knife And Melnisch Was Jewish So It Had Significance To Him Because Of The Genocide Against The Jewish People.

Absolutely one of the best war movies ever made. I've got a big interest in WWII, so this movie is always more powerful for me than most movies...
Glad to see this movie had such a strong reaction for you guys :)

I've actually only seen this movie once before - when it first came out - because it is so long it's almost a committment, and so emotional it is difficult to watch. But, I think all Americans should watch it at least once to gain some understanding of what was sacrificed. I believe Speilberg meant for this movie to be a true depiction of war, and this is the closest some of us will ever get to understanding (thank god)- I think he did a great job. Thanks for making this committment and sharing your emotions with us!

My granddad fought in the war and had a lot of medals for it. He never really spoke of it, but? His name is mentioned amongst other names, in the royal navel collage in Greenwich, London, England. My nan was also a WREN. One of the toughest women I've ever known! This is such a powerful movie, Tom earned that oscar for it. He won best oscar in 94 for Philadelphia and then in 95 for this. Great reaction guys! Three other good movies from WW2? Red tails. Memphis belle. And Glory. There's so many older ones as well. Zulu and Bridge on the river Kwai. Great reaction as always I love watching the full length ones now with you both!

Im sure someone has already mentioned this, but the "germans" trying to surrender during D day are saying, “Please don’t shoot me! I am not German, I am Czech, I didn’t kill anyone! I am Czech!" During ww2, the nazis would force people from territories they captured, to fight on the front lines of different theaters of war. They were basically POWs being forced to be fodder between the germans and the allies. But thats the fog of war, no one actually knows whats really going on and we all have our orders. (and he gets emotional after being handed the knife because they just killed a bunch of children. When the nazis were getting desperate. they started putting children into the front lines known as "hitlers youth" and they were giving those knives as proof of their service.)

God bless the Greatest Generation for all the sacrifices and hard fought battles to protect our democracies and freedoms from the tyranny unleashed by those evil dictators. Thank you to all our vets, old and new I hope we earn what they have given us. May their sacrifices never have been made in vain.
In early November through the 11th we wear poppies in Canada to symbolize our gratitude and remembrance.
My grandfather stormed Juno Beach with the Canadian infantry at 17 years old (he lied about his age to enlist), he made it to Holland before getting hit, he survived but it took him out of the war.
I tear up at the end of this movie every time I watch it.
