John Doe's sin was Envy-- which instigated Mills' predicted reaction, Wrath. I've never hated to see a bad guy "win" more than this movie, even laying there dead in the dirt.

That look on Asia's face at the end... 😁 I don't know if you missed it, but they did mention something near the end about "another female victim with her face cut off", and suddenly Mills was mentioning his wife a lot, when we hadn't seen her in awhile...all REALLY good foreshadowing.
They did a really good job of showing how irritable and short-tempered Mills was, even from the very first scene. Once John Doe knew he was going to do this, the audience already knew how irrational and triggered Mills really was.
The next horror movie you need to watch is SAW. I'm not mentioning ANYTHING about it, just trust me - you need to see it :)

That police commissioner who stopped to answer questions from the Media is Richard Roundtree, otherwise known from his 70's movies "Shaft" :)

Ok, now I can finish, lol. The general consensus is that Mills never went to prison. At the most he went into a psych facility, rightfully so. I know I would have been picking imaginary bugs out of my hair if I went through that. I personally think Doe picked Mills when he took the first photo of him. He saw he was already a man that led with anger so he'd be easy to flip, add in a wife and child, boom. Ready made wrath.
This movie, imho, was absolute perfection. It was intelligent, story wise AND how it was shot. The color scheme, rain, not showing the actual violence leaves everything up to your imagination. The actors were freaking phenomenal... even the Lust guy. His very short part shook me to my core when I saw it. Kevin Spacey was not advertised for this movie, with very good reason. Never show the killer, that's something that's rarely done and it was perfectly done here. When he came on screen we lost our collective shit in the theater. Though, technically he WAS shown a few times even one time most people miss; the opening credits. Asia, you blew my mind paying attention to the journals, most people miss it. They also showed him cutting off his fingerprints.
I've always graded movies based on their ability to surprise me as I don't get surprised easily and I RARELY jump. This movie got me with the head and it was done so elegantly it shot it to my number one, not a single movie has managed to surprise me that much since.
Asia, also, you're the girl I want with me on the streets. You have hood reflexes! You hear that you duck, bob and weave or just hit the floor. I was raised around drive by's so I appreciate a fast ducker!

Gotcha!!! That makes a lot of sense because they never said where they were the entire movie. Seven is a really, really good movie.

Ok... have to pause it for a few minutes but going to try and answer some of your bigger questions.
First, location. Any big city, USA. David Fincher made it purposefully vague so that you wouldn't get caught up in the location. It does resemble NYC because the screenwriter, Andrew Kevin Walker, spent time there trying to make it as a writer. It was all filmed at various locations in CA.
Ok, the books that Mills get are cliffnotes versions.
