He could've easily just did Whitebeard or killed someone not as popular and there would've been a good threat established. I don't believe Oda took much risks in killing off characters, but he has done other risks and since it's endgame now in the series he is taking risks. Simply stating he isn't a risk taker is just you being disingeuous.

The statement Nick made was purely to please his op fans, he said something extremely similar about kishimoto during the pain arc. I understand it, he has to make his fans happy. Still, I Disagree.

In the 1st popularity poll he ranked 8th, in the 2nd he ranked 10th, in the 3rd, he ranked 5th, in the 5th ,he ranked 6th and in the 7th he ranked 5th again. The 3rd poll was before Ace died and that was his lowest ranking. 7th poll was the worldwide poll and he was 5th.

But he let Akainu punch a whole through his pride to protect the person more important than it. Makes perfect sense on why he did that.

It's the first time Oda has ever killed off a big character. Almost every other big mangaka has done that. Sorry that statement is just nonsense, this was not a "bold" move.

I'll avoid spoilers incase he reads these but dressrosa for example... sooo many better and riskier ways he could've wrapped that arc up. Same with wano.

This is literally the first 2 characters he ever killed off and are still, to this DAY the only 2 major characters to die in the story. It's this masterpiece of a story's biggest flaw. Oda does not take risks very often.
