I get there were a good 4-5 minutes of Sakura flashbacks but the point was to build up to Sakura's "decision" and then failure (which I thought was kind of stupid she couldn't do it, Kishimoto kind of screwed up on that one).

I have no issues with him skipping some flashback related scenes as he is binging Naruto. Here you see the difference in naruto and one piece especially, naruto operates with fillers and memories, while one piece operates with mainly memories and extreme slow pace when they get close to the manga releases. Take some sections of dressrosa as an example, entire episodes is legit a single manga chapter.

This may have been useful if you watched them back when it was still airing, but Nick is binging these and are pretty fresh in his mind. There's a reason why new anime don't do this. It's because they drastically shorten the flashbacks that it doesn't sacrifice a full on episode OR they're just not that long running that you forget about them.

As someone who read the manga in film school as we were exploring anime these were some of my favourite chapters, highlighting Naruto coming full circle as a man of conviction post-Pain and the panel of Naruto and Sasuke’s roles being reversed added a whole new dimension to why Naruto wants to save Sasuke so badly; he lives with an irrational guilt of not being the hero/friend to Sasuke that Sasuke was to him. He credits his childhood friend for being one of the people who showed him the way and thinks that if only he hadn’t been a stubborn immature selfish kid back then he could have done the same for said friend. It’s a way deeper and more complex dynamic than people give it credit for and that’s partly because of this horrible adaption of those chapters… the manga’s peak is arguably ‘Jiraya the gallant -> the rinnegan retrieval’ and Shippuuden ruined what should have been more peak Naruto episodes here… smh
