Jiraya's death moment probably was the hardest-hitting and most emotional gut-punch character death to me in Naruto. Absolute emotional cinematic peak masterpiece. Jiraya became one of my favorite characters.

Nicholas, I saw you experiencing the Pain Arc (sabaton), and I have to tell you, your quote, "It was like Star Wars, like the best things I watched as a kid," perfectly captures my feelings during this arc. My eyes couldn't believe what I was seeing—this was unbelievably great. The tension, the storytelling, the emotions, the fights, the OSTs... this was next-level stuff, and I was flabbergasted for a long time. Now, revisiting this with you, I remembered it all and felt those same emotions again. I can't put into words how godlike the storytelling in this arc is. The philosophy, the connections with "A Tale of the Gutsy Ninja," Jiraiya, and the way you defeat the main villain by changing his heart... it's so original, so unbelievably great, that I'm at a loss for words. Thank God for the creator of this anime. Thank God I caught up to this anime in my late twenties (same as you), because as a kid or teenager, I probably wouldn't have been able to appreciate the depth of the storytelling. And thank God I was able to watch it like you did — when the whole show was live. Watching this on a weekly basis must have been pure suffering. (Just imagine all those poor souls who started watching Naruto in 2002 and didn't make it until 2017, when Shippuden ended.) The amount of jaw-dropping moments in this arc is unbelievable, and I'm telling you — there's more to come. Looking back, I can easily place "Naruto" as a phenomenon, as the first anime for many, and as something that stands alongside LoTR, Star Wars, and all the greatest creations humanity has ever made.

I feel the same with much of what happened with Naruto later on in the story. With one piece it’s been the most consistent with story and satisfying revelations that live up to the hype. Oda is an unmatched author not many book series have been able to world build to the extent Oda has done with One piece- particularly with how masterfully they interconnect and seamlessly supplement the character’s individual storyline. Even if you take little portions of the story line namis arc or robins backstory, or Kuma and Laws backstories. These are all so well written with lots of intention in every detail supplementing the world it’s being told in. You could find hour long theory videos on YouTube because of the level of depth the story has.

Also as a “whole” when I started reading AOT - what I loved about it was the lore and mystery aspects of it, much of that was not lived up to with the later developments of the story and I was pretty disappointed with the direction it went after the time-skip. Erens character development and the revelations of titans and how everything came together in the end did not live up to the build up the story was cooking and felt very mediocre in the face of the events we saw prior in the story.

I don’t think it’s insane, AOT as whole had the same downfall with the plot. I think the highs in Naruto are better than highs in attack on titan that are largely accredited to the anime adaptation. And with One piece- the lore and depth is on a completely different league with interconnecting subplots and well written characters. I’m more of a manga reader and attack on titan’s manga has incredible story but the world building and characters are just not of the same league

Jiraiya is, outside of Naruto, Sasuske and Guy, probably the strongest hidden leaf shinobi. He could 1v1 every akatsuki in a straight fight except maybe Pain w/o information on how he works and abilities. He could 1v1 every kage. He is incredibly well written w/o any sudden turns of character motive for plot sake. Favorite anime character of all time.

I remember back before these episodes were out, my friend was reading the manga releases (the fan translations way before we got them in the US. Back then the US was a few years behind), and like when he told me that there was a guy named Pain, but he's SIX guys, that blew my damn mind. I couldn't wrap my head around it the way he was describing it. And then to see it animated... holy shit. It was just a few seconds, but that shoulder touch, Naruto looking up, and him turning... the animation on that was pure cinema. I believe they animated it at 24fps, instead of the 12fps that anime is normally made at. Simply beautiful. Sayonara, Jiraya-sensei. Pervy Sage.
