I Watched AKIRA (1988) for THE FIRST TIME (UNCUT)

Comments

Was sad that the video got taken off youtube, was really looking forward to this reaction.

Jonathan Hanham

I held off the anime just to save money to buy the manga

AF362

The great thing about this animation is that the mouth movements of the characters correctly represent the shape of the mouth when speaking Japanese.

I held off from watching this movie for years. Glad I watched it with you. No wonder it's a classic.

Akira is a fantastic film. A lot of people will be like "but the manga", but the film stands on its own. Yes, it is incredibly frenetic and disjointed in its storytelling, but that actually serves a purpose. There's some great YouTube videos analyzing this film and honestly I would really recommend them. This film ties in to so many different ideas and it's really difficult to grasp, but that's part of what makes it so great. It's not simple, it's not just a one-and-done, it's art. For me Akira is one of my all-time favorite movies, 10/10. As for how I would describe what it is about, I would say it is a kind of allegory about the relationship between mankind and power. But it is also about cycles of disaster, it is about generational trauma, and it is about societal renewal and rebirth. There's a video which goes into some of the cultural context of Akira which I would recommend here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5XeDQ6sb2g Nerdwriter's essay on the usage of light in the film is cool as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf0WjeE6eyM Krispies' video on Akira as a master of violence is also excellent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-PYa3dFWkA If you have to watch only one of these, watch the first. It's dense but it is deeply insightful.

Mator

Dude, and this isn't even the entire story. The manga is insane. There's so much more they couldn't put in

TimothySleuth

Chris Gama

Thank you. I may be an old codger when it comes to how long I've been watching anime, but I just hate to see the disrespect! lol

Chris Gama

those haters needs to read this comment. well said

stephanie johnson

I think I first watched Akira like, half my life ago, and my god I've come to an uncomfortable realization of how much this movie influenced my personality 🤣that's insane. I'm also so damn glad it held up to my memory of how freaking Amazing of a movie it is. I'll never get over that animation. It's on such a completely different level than anything else, like, I can't even equate that shit to anything else on the list. I'm also so so glad you liked it and that you understood it! It feels like a fever dream after everything, that hasn't changed, but at least it still makes sense in it's own beautiful and unique way! Thank you for watching this, Nick!!! 💖

So okay, story time: 1992, I was a young teen. My brother and I loved to go to this little comic book store in town. They just started getting in some anime VHS tapes that they offered to rent. We didn't know what the fuck anime even was. We rented Akira. What a mind fuck for little 13 year old me. And this was the original dub, not the "leave me alone!" second dub that they did later on. The old dub was... well, anybody ever seen the first TMNT cartoon from back then? Well, Kaneda had Leonardo's voice. No cap, it was so weird for me to hear Leonardo scream "TETSUOOOO!!" Anyway, yeah we bought the movie eventually, and I watched it many, many times before I thought I fully understood it. But I knew that I loved it. Such a great, great movie. It was later on that I found out that part of the reason why the movie is so confusing is that its ONE movie based off 6 really big manga tankoban's. Its a ton of material that they had to condense down to the movie, and a shit load that they left out of it. Like most of the ending is completely different. A few years ago there was rumors and some information that came out that some studio got the rights to re-animate Akira, and they planned to follow the manga, make it more of a longer running anime series rather than a movie. So it technically wouldn't be a remake, but more of a better telling of the manga canon. We haven't heard anything about it since so I'm not sure if the project was scrapped or not. And some motherfuckers think they could make a live-action version of this. Could you imagine? Naw, they'd fuck it up. Anyway. This movie shaped me as a kid, made me an anime fan. I truly think one hasn't experienced anime until they've seen this movie, regardless if they like it or not. Its an experience that we all should go through as fans of the medium.

Chris Gama

man, every once in a while I check the chat... holy cow, the disrespect some people have on this movie. Kids today, sigh. They claim to be anime fans but they call this masterpiece "goofy." Look, you don't have to like the movie, its confusing at first watch, the animation isn't super slick like today's anime, but you gotta respect it. This was all hand drawn, hand painted, crafted art. And arguably this movie is a huge piece of why anime even got a foothold in the west. Sure we had some localized anime here and there before like Speed Racer and Voltron, but when a movie like this came out people couln't believe that a CARTOON can not only look like this, but also have adult, serious subject matter. It helped to pique interest in anime outside of Japan. It raised the bar of what animation could achieve. Respect your fore-bearers. And now, Nick, you earned your primary Otaku badge from watching this. Congratulations!

Chris Gama

Ghost in a shell. Or perfect blue next plzzzz

Joe Rodgers

I'm pretty sure Nick said he's already seen all Ghibli films off camera

Hannah

That’s the obviously correct comment. I was trying to restrain myself and make a more digestible suggestion. But 100%, he should watch ALL THE GHIBLI

Taliesin Breen

Just do every ghibli movie, marathon night

Octo DADDY

Holy shit I am looking forward to this one. Highly recommend Princess Mononoke and (as another commenter suggested) Nausicaa.

Taliesin Breen

Gets better with every watch!

Ashton Laznicka

Holy shit! Is this really happening?! Nic you're the best bro🥳

Valon ws

Since you enjoyed this movie, you should try some other great older anime movies. Like “Nausicaa of the valley of the wind” it’s even older than this movie by a couple years. One of my favorite ones to watch and it’s technically a studio Ghibli film but before the name. It’s great give it a shot!

Wesley Lambert

Daaaamn. Manga is a masterpiece but this is quite the nice surprise Nik!
