I thought about it and I think the reason why they showed that Garp is Luffy's grandfather is that this is the only way they could show such a small Luffy interacting with Garp because in the next possible backstory of Luffy... it won't matter that the child will look different

2023-09-02 18:31:22 +0000 UTCYeah, as soon as I saw in the trailers that Garp was gonna be in the first season, I was like "dude, they're totally gonna drop that Garp is Luffy's grandpa early.... Nick is definitely getting spoiled" And its kinda unfortunate, because that is a great reveal in the anime, but at the same time, when I think about it, and also fun fact, in the original Romance Dawn chapter, they actually showed that Garp was Luffy's grandpa, and he was a pirate instead of a marine, he was originally gonna be to one who gives Luffy his straw hat, but he then revised that and instead we got Shanks and he made Garp a marine instead, but any of us who read the original Romance Dawn already knew Garp's relationship with Luffy from the start, and I could see that being a reason why Oda approved it, since that wasn't really a huge secret except for people who didnt read the og RD
