The battle is made up of three main parts, the beginning, the bridge and then the confrontation with Virion in the concluding battle. Eventually, all routes (bridge battle, ship battle, temple nursing and ambush) will lead to the bridge and you'll determine what happens to it. You can save your forces but you better make sure you have the necessary skills and health actually to secure the bridge or you can let it collapse and lose part of your army but also get rid of the Blood Guard too.
Neither choice is meant to punish you and people aren't going to hate you if you let the bridge collapse but if you've not secured any alliances in Chapter 10 and if you failed your stat checks in the earlier scenes (meaning a higher loss of your army), expect it to affect the failure/success endings you'll receive.
