Leif historically reached eastern Canada hundreds of years before Columbus reached the Caribbean. He was the true European discoverer of North America. Every single major character and plot line in this show is based off of real events and either real people from the era like canute or mythological figures in the stories of the viking society like thorfinn. The generally accepted idea for why Vinland isn't known about today is that the few people who came from the Norse areas to Vinland were either wiped out or joined native tribes in the area to survive.

Vinland or Vineland is Newfoundland and down through the atlantic coast, "discovered" by Leif Erikson. The story is based off the journals of viking explorers called The Vinland Sagas, hence the anime name. Newfoundland still has the original settlement of the vikings there for tourists to see if you're ever interested. I'm unsure about the historical accuracies of the anime but you know, it's anime but regardless it's a good historical anime.
