2022-07-19 23:02:41 +0000 UTCIf someone else has already said this and I didn't catch it, I apologize for that, but one of the many things I specifically LOVE about this episode is the long shots of the forest as dawn approaches, because it actually ties into the "forest" metaphor. The discussion, arguments, and ideological struggle is constantly framed against the backdrop of the dark wood, like it's asking the question, "are they out yet? Will they get out? Can they get out? Can anyone?" Was it mostly a way to save a bunch of budget for upcoming events? Yeah, definitely, but tying that into something that's actually really thematically relevant and follows up some of the most powerful imagery and philosophy delivered by Sasha's outrageously kindhearted dad is an extremely cool way to save budget AND create a unique, unsettling atmosphere that evokes the themes of the whole work and the current arc especially. Obviously that's my take on it and I imagine it worked really well for some people (like me) but didn't work very well for others, which is totally fair, but I think the connection to the forest metaphor gets overlooked sometimes, and for me at least it actually elevated the episode. I don't mind looking the other way when a studio's obviously conserving a bit of budget (usually), but the way they did it here was something I thought was actually cool and legitimately added something to the scene and dialogue, so I have a lot of fondness for that.

2022-07-18 05:44:19 +0000 UTCIf you didn't catch what the scene was in the first few seconds of the episode, it was Jean dreaming of a life with Mikasa, the women holding up the baby is Mikasa - you can tell by the scar the woman has on her right cheek. Tho if you missed that fact, it isn't easy to see as the scar is kinda hidden behind her hair, you can really only see the a small part of it.

They didn't like the long shots of the forest scenery because they saw it as lazy. Especially because this was such a dialogue heavy episode, I personally see it as a very effective way to save time and money to put into later portions of the season.

Hence, the faction that is opposing what Eren is trying to do is labelled as "Cringevengers". I love this show more than anything and honestly it couldn't have gone in a better direction xD they had to be cringe to make what happens next more enjoyable to watch.

This is one of my favorites of the entire show, a culmination of all these characters have done and endured, and it is beautifully written and directed. Both sides have done wrong and been wronged, no one is "good" or "evil", and it is handled brilliantly here. Another awesome reaction man.

Story wise, the characters need to cooperate to take on this greater force that's become Eren and the Jaegerists, however how could they do that without talking things out some way? With all this considered, I think it's an excellent episode. The same effect could not have been achieved if the writers cut ahead to the action and excused it by simply saying, "Yeah they talked off-screen and now they're buddies." We needed this episode and honestly, the characters needed this moment.
