Mithras is an ancient god from the Persian region, who was worshipped by soldiers and other people in the Roman Empire during the first few centuries AD. The worship of Mithras was a mystery religion, which means that much of what is known about it today is based on limited written and archaeological evidence, as the followers of Mithras kept their beliefs secret. In terms of Mithras' same-sex relationships with men, there is some evidence that this was a part of the worship of the god. Some ancient texts suggest that Mithras had a close relationship with a male companion named Cautes, who was often depicted alongside him in art and iconography. Some scholars have interpreted this relationship as being romantic or sexual in nature, although others argue that it was purely platonic. There are also some depictions of Mithras and Cautes holding hands or embracing, which has been interpreted by some as evidence of a same-sex relationship.
