The Hindu god Mitra's role has changed throughout time, but oftentimes he is associated with friendship and the rising sun. Hindu god Varuna on the other hand, is associated with the seas, waters, and justice. They are commonly portrayed in Vedic literature as models of male brotherhood and brotherly love. The two are actually portrayed in early Brahmana scriptures as opposing moon phases that unite in same-sex relationships. Mitra injects Varuna with his semen on new moon nights to begin the lunar cycle, and Varuna repays the favor on the full moon.
