Bahuchara Mata is a Hindu goddess of fertility and chastity, but she is most well known as the patron of the "hijra" community, a third gender category most equivalent to what is known as transgender women in the West. Both goddesses have a unique place in Hindu mythology due to their transcendence of gender and sex barriers.
