Goddess Sita is the much-beleaguered wife of Lord Rama; despite following her husband into a life of aesthetic exile in the woods and going through a literal trial by fire to prove that she had maintained her chastity during her period of kidnapping by a demon king, Rama still abandons her while she is pregnant with his child because he feels his honor is diminished in the eyes of the community for living in the house of another man. In our telling of events, the magnanimous Kali Ma, the ultimate personification of pure primordial cosmic energy, appears to Sita during this second exile and liberates Sita from her suffering and loneliness in more ways than one.
