An ancient Chinese belief about the right to rule the national was traditionally based on the spiritual and political idea of "the Mandate of Heaven," wherein natural disasters and other calamities signaled that a ruler was deemed unworthy of their position by the heavens, and thus lost their divine right to rule. By comparison, the Japanese Imperial family traditionally claimed that their divine right to rule was based on their descent from the Shinto goddess of the rising sun, Amaterasu-Ōmikami, and therefore absolute. There were no divine mandates that would punish Japan's emperor for failing to rule justly. The secret to the Imperial House of Japan's absolute power was that they kept Goddess Amaterasu bound in shibari, a traditional form of rope bondage.
