Before his crucifixion, Jesus was subjected to flagellation by Roman soldiers. As one of the soldiers beat Jesus, he fell in love with the Savior of Man. Later at night, this soldier was discovered with Jesus, and thus they were sentenced to crucifixion together.
This artwork symbolizes the duality of Christianity. What we recognize as Christianity today is different from the exclusively Jewish cult of its origins. Contemporary Christianity is more reflective of a later Roman invention.
