What A Cartoon! - Red Dwarf "Gunmen of the Apocalypse"

A whole decade before Futurama wowed Fox viewers with its masterful mix of sci-fi and comedy, BBC Two launched Red Dwarf, an outer space version of The Odd Couple set three million years in the future. And, over the course of the last 30-plus years, this smash hit evolved beyond its simple sitcom premise and has seen plenty of planet-hopping adventures, alternate realities, doppelgangers, computer simulations, simulants, and GELFs. On this episode of What A Cartoon, join us as we hop 'cross the pond and explore Red Dwarf: the series that embiggened our vocabularies with words like "smeg," "goit," and "gimboid."

Liverpudlian = Blend of Liverpool +ā€Ž puddle (as a pun on a puddle being a small pool) +ā€Ž -ian. BBC Radio 4 is where Hitchikers Guide started (can't remember if you mentioned that). Craig Charles was doing a soap opera, Coronation Street and his driver (he lived in London, Coronation Street's in Manchester) took photos of him blitzed out of his mind in the back of the limo. The Cat *is* a dancer by training. That's why he's so good in the music video. The only thing about Dr Who you need to know is the banging theme tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByOU5CwuZjU (weirdly, this live performance by Orbital opens with the Craig Charles (Lister) poem from the episode)

Manchester mentioned!!! Long-time fan from Manchester, happy to hear you dive into this extremely specific thing I grew up watching! Red Dwarf had such a unique, lonely but funny, hi-tech but scummy atmosphere. We took it as an odd-ball idea for a sitcom at the time, but looking back, cyberpunk was very rare and this was a seriously unique show!

This is awesome. Never expected to hear you guys speak about this show, me and my friends would watch This all the time. It's a British classic, I had all the DVDs. The Simpsons & Red Dwarf were some of the few shows that I could watch with my family and we would all enjoy without arguing. Craig Charles is a national treasure and I have never stopped trying to imitate his Liverpool accent šŸ˜‚

I had access to good Indian food in my youth but I was a picky eater so I avoided it! Greatest mistake of my life. Thankfully there are plenty of options in Japan; I can think of four within walking distance and I don't even live in a big city.

Radio drama is still a thing in the UK, but it's dying sadly. That said, the guy who wrote this year's Oscar nominee Conclave made his start on BBC Radio. Also, Danny John-Jules' other truly notable role: https://youtu.be/eM-MvPwszt8?si=WYvVv6AXtmbqfIlm
