TalKing of the Hill - Bills Are Made to Be Broken

With Peggy's miraculous survival story (mostly) behind us, it's time to focus on characters who aren't part of the Hill family. And this month, we're looking at a whopper of a Bill episode; one where his only lasting legacy is challenged, causing him to risk life and limb for one last shot at high school football glory. So listen in as your nerdy hosts do their best to feign knowledge about sports!

For next Christmas season, for What a Cartoon, you guys should review the Christmas "Hank is a Trucker" episode from later in the show! It's one of the best episodes, especially from the later batch!

Bill's front facing, veins bulging, slow motion face has got to be one of the funniest frames of KotH

I'm just noticing from the episode art how even the lines on Bill's face kind of look like tears streaming down his face. Sad man to the core of his design.

Life would imitate art 3 years later when NFL defensive lineman Michael Strahan set the single season sack record. On the record breaking sack, quarterback Brett Favre would passively slide to the ground allowing Strahan to get the easy sack. Many fans felt like Favre was just "giving" Strahan the record unfairly. It's now one of those records where there's at least someone who will always say "Asterisk! Not fully legitimate!" anytime it's mentioned. However there are also those that will defend Favre saying that he was just protecting himself by not looking to take a big hit during a tackle. I can't really blame him!

Hey guys, One other possible inspiration for this episode was college basketball star Nykesha Sales from the University of Connecticut. In her Senior season of 1998, she was on her way to breaking the school's career points record, and was one point short when she suffered a season and career-ending injury. UCONN's coach Geno Auriemma felt at fault for her falling short of the record, because he had pulled her from earlier games when the team had a big lead. So he made arrangements with the conference commissioner and the school's next opponent Villanova to stage a Ricky Suggs-style event. After the opening tip, the ball was thrown to Nykesha, who was standing underneath the basket, and with her leg in a cast she was granted an uncontested layup. Villanova then took possession and was given the same chance, tying the score at 2-2. This was a big controversy at the time, and as you can imagine, it elicited a lot of hot takes. Great show as always guys. - Dave

Oof. My knee started popping this week, and I have yet to grow my Operation Infinite Walrus tusks.

I’m guessing that the Arroyo Diner is a reference to El Arroyo, a well-known Mexican Restaurant in Austin, Texas. El Arroyo has been around for 50 years and is best known for its humorous marquee, which became more visible online during Covid.
