What A Cartoon! - The Venture Bros. "What Color is Your Cleansuit?"

Thanks to the generous contributions of patron David Whittington, we're once again talking about one of our all-time favorites, The Venture Bros! After the show's tragic cancellation in 2020, we return to the fifth season and discuss that premiere and the show's second half, full of references that arrive at least three levels deep. So grab some student green and enjoy this week's extra-large podcast!

I watched seasons 1-3 or so a bunch in reruns so I had a blast returning to the show for this even if I haven't seen season 4 before. I do want to return to the start and watch through it all at some point, though the bits of poorly aged transphobia and what not does make me a bit hesitant

You were talking about a potential Saved by the Bell reboot and said something along the lines of No Screech no deal. Seems like its definitely no deal then.

Those '60s Marvel cartoons were something special, all right. Thanks to the Hulk cartoon's theme, I have the insatiable urge to insert the phrase "ain't he unglamo-rays" into every conversation even tangentially related to the Gamma Slamma: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9u7GjNkp5Y ... Like right now!

That song from the end of P.R.O.M just hits me like a tonne of bricks every time.

Paul chooses the name "Maud' Dib" as his Fremen name, and is given the name 'Usul' by his trial chief (the first being public and the second being his private name) Paul is declared to be the 'Mahdi' of the Fremen thanks to the prophecy, but that prophecy was planted by the Bene Gesserit and was made to be exploited by them if needed. The Bene Gesserit of course were playing the long game of galactic control and were working to breed the "Kwisatz Haderach" which was supposed to be their ubermensch to provide a stable future for the human race. And that is certainly not Paul.

Okay... I have a lot of typos in here. Next time I'll wait for my lunch break.

Dean's subplots as the chosen one screams dune to me. Down to the fact that the natives have their own made up name, like the Fremen, to the made-up name Dean is given once he's chosen. In dune that name is the Kwisatz Haderach, and Paul Atreidis is Dustin in that story to bring the natives of the planet together and bring about an age of water I think? I'm typing all of this while I deliver mail, so you can Google the rest and decide if I'm wrong. So excited to be that guy for the first time since I started listening to the show a few years ago. Great episode, love this cartoon, and love this podcast!

We recorded this in October so you'll have to remind us how Screech came up.

Big time seconded on the go team venture book

Just got the art book! It is massive but worth every cent. “Your frisbee golf has become violent, you hurt a person.” Slays me every time

Dont worry, i was a boyscout in the 90s and it was still all sorts of "indian something" fake nonsense. Also my troop got shuttered cuz we were smokin weed at camp. No fun allowed.

I do love this show. I think it's in my personal top 10 easy, probably top 5. And for anyone who does like it, that Go Team Venture book is a must read. I think it's in that book where Doc talks about how a lot of this show is about showing how super science fucked all of these people over and I love Dean's growth in this season as he basically spends it discovering that reality about himself. It's very rewarding as, in the same book, they also note that this show is essentially just a dorky, animated, family sitcom and that kind of character growth isn't often found in sitcoms. I wish I had the time that I did in my 20s when I could re-watch this show over and over, but probably like a lot folks, I haven't watched the later seasons nearly as much as the first 2 or 3, but this is arguably a show that just gets better. I did do a re-watch last summer, and while some stuff has aged poorly, I was surprised at how much holds up, especially where Season One is concerned. There was definitely a lot of the "R" word early on and I like that Doc and Jackson own up to most of that stuff. They even acknowledge that one in-show in Season 4 when Monarch directs that term at Ned, the Thing parody, and JJ reprimands him. I think him using it in this episode is a deliberate statement by the show that Monarch is a villain and will use hurtful terms like that, but I think they keep it out of the mouths of the "good guys," a category that is certainly very subjective on this show as Doc Venture is, in many ways, the true villain. I do hope we see more of this show at some point, since Season 8 was basically all sketched out and ready to go into production. Even if we can't get another season, it would make a lot of sense to commission a special.

Screech comments didn't age too well

Man, I really need to watch this show so I can comfortably listen to this podcast. I’ve only seen the first couple episodes so I haven’t really gotten into the weeds, but from the little bit I’ve seen it feels very promising Sad it got canceled

Hank venture is also super important to me because not only do I view him as someone with ADHD, we have such similar personalities. The way Hank always wants to, as he says in season seven, "be russian guyovitch or the bat" and just play and have fun and create and fill and explore all these different roles, its just perfect.

Andrew Giachetti

oh and go team venture ✌️

Andrew Giachetti

I'm really glad you guys, albeit briefly, mentioned that the show finally acknowledged that Hank has ADHD. It seemed like Henry wanted to shy away from it, but as someone with ADHD, OCD, et al., I want to say how important of a moment it was for me when the show began acknowledging that Hank has ADHD, because I've always known it while watching the show, and he has been such an important character to me, as someone who struggles with profound dysphoria everyday brought on by having to living my life in a way that's completely at odds with how my brain works and how I view and interact with the world. I know that sounds insane, like I'm stealing valor from other marginalized groups, but that itself just adds to struggle of feeling completely erased as someone suffering from a disability, that people refuse to recognize as such, and one that wouldn't hold me back if society wasn't the way it was (consider most "behavioral disabilities" such ADHD or autism, etc in the context of the hunter gather societies humans spent most of their time developing in versus modern society, its not a disability then, its beneficial). Anyway, look at how the world, or specifically doc, treats Hank. With such disdain and scorn because they cant understand how Hank interacts with the world, but look at what happens with Hank when he's given the space to explore his interests on his own terms: he starts a relatively successful band, a wildly successful detective agency (I wont spoil it, but Hank did solve that one, even accidently), and a continually successful enterprise "Hank Co." which features heavily in this episode. Hank has the capacity to be wildly successful because he's creative, kind, intelligent, and his passion, driven from ADHD, will allow him to dig deeper and commit harder to the things he's really interested in than someone without ADHD. And I don't mean that to disparage people without ADHD, i simply mean that we will often pursue things we're interested in to the detriment of other areas of our lives. This was a poor attempt to say a long point short, so I'll finish by saying the venture bros is such an important show to me because hank is such an important character, and the show being canceled really hurts me in such a big way, because I wanted to see where they were taking Hank most of all. Hank, when given the space to be himself on his own terms does amazing things. People with ADHD can also do great things when given the space to be ourselves on our own terms. I feel like I may never get to know what it's like to live that way, since Im not someone of means, but it really gives me a little of what I need to keep going seeing someone like Hank Venture on TV.
