Vote On The February 2021 What A Cartoon Movie!

HAPPY NEW YEAR from us at the Talking Simpsons Network! We're all hoping 2021 will be a better one for all of us, and as the holidays come to an end, we're looking forward to our next podcasts. Specifically, the subject of our $10 premium podcast for February, which we need your help to decide.

Currently, we're so far ahead in podcast recordings that we've already recorded the next What A Cartoon Movie! (Dexter's Lab: Ego Trip), meaning that in January we have time to record our February 2021 movie podcast, and we can start as soon as you choose the subject for us!

And just FYI: For those of you who are brand new to the Talking SImpsons Patreon, WELCOME. Also you should know that once a month we release the What A Cartoon Movie! podcast, an extra-long discussion about an animated feature film, exclusively for our $10+ Patreon subscribers. And when we open up the voting for each month's subject, we want all the $5 subscribers to also have a chance to be heard, so those subscribers can help pick episodes they might enjoy down the line!

Our next 2021 poll takes us to exciting new territory: Studio Ghibli films NOT directed by Hayao Miyazaki! Yes, there's much more to the legendary animation studio, and we have four other auteurs we'd love to showcase.

Here's what you'll be voting on:

Only Yesterday (1991), Isao Takahata's nostalgic coming-of-age tale for Japan's mid-1960s that for decades was unreleased stateside!

Pom Poko (1994), Takahata's follow-up film that delved into Japan's environmental crisis while also having fun with silly tanookis!

When Marnie Was There (2014), the generational story of childhood directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, his final film before leaving Ghibli!

Whisper of the Heart (1995), the late Yoshifumi Kondō's first film as a sole director that's a grounded tale of the pains of creativity that spawned a famous meme!

So please, make your choice known before the poll closes on the night of January 7! Thanks as always for your continued support of our podcast, we couldn't have made it to 2021 without you! And here's to many more years of podcasts to come!

Hell yeah. I need more discussion about West Virginia.

I understand. I do like some anime.

Matt

As the post explains, the theme this month is Ghibli films not directed by Miyazaki.

Bob Mackey

My thought was that people were going to look these up, see the tanuki, and go with that and I was not disappointed.

Why are all the choices anime?

Matt

I haven't seen Marnie, but this is a poll with only good options from my point of view. Although I have a special place in my heart for Only Yesterday and Pom Poko. Would recommend checking out the Ghiblies shorts to anyone who has a few minutes free, too.

Adam Gaudry

It feels like Only Yesterday came out only yesterday

Alex Irish

If Whisper wins, get Rebecca Sugar as a guest!

James Miller

If Only Yesterday doesn't win this poll, can you please make sure to include it in future ones? One of my absolute favourites

Tom Fraser

I voted for When Marnie Was There because I’ve never had as strong an emotional reaction to a movie as I did with that one (which has a lot to do with Priscilla Ahn’s song “Fine On the Outside”). I love Whisper of the Heart and think Only Yesterday is great too so I’m fine with those as well. I’ve seen Pom Poko twice and I still don’t really remember what it’s about other than environmentalism (*insert cheap scrotum joke here*)

Not familiar with any of these but I gotta vote for the one with Tanookis, just like my best friend super mario

Paul

I'm sorry to do this on this post. But it is the first post of 2021 so .... Welcome to the world of tomorrow!!!!
