REALLY NOT SIMPSONS RELATED but it was talked about in this episode because of the Columbine talk on Talking Futurama and my comment on said episode, so I'm gonna comment anyway -- I've definitely mentioned this in the comments of another episode, but that bit of talk about abstinence only education makes me want to reiterate. I went to a Catholic high school (graduated in 2014 so it's pretty recent still), and it was still very much "don't have sex until marriage, then do whatever you want" and our talks about sex and reproduction were limited to a section of religion class (in middle school) and then to like a single class during the "health" portion of phys ed (and gym wasn't mandatory after 9th grade). They preach being tolerant and anti-bullying, but there stance on sex is a large part of why people (read: girls/ young women) get slut-shamed so much for doing anything, because the curriculum tells us it's wrong (even though the guys never get shit about it). It's such two-faced nonsense and more evidence of how incapable schools are with combating bullying. -- Semi-related, the graduating class a year above me voted a gay couple as "couple of the year" or whatever for the yearbook, but administration said they couldn't print that because it was a Catholic school and thus gave it to the runners up. At the time I was like "what the fuck is this?" but like a lot of things now that I'm removed from it more, I'm astounded at it. Someone really should have taken that to the press and caused a massive shitstorm about literal discrimination. -- It's been interesting talking with friends and other people I've met in university who went to non-Catholic schools, because they're always astounded at how fucked up and backwards things were there. I was already definitely left-leaning as a teenager, but if I was how I am now while I was still at my old school, I would flip shit every other week.
