Talking Futurama - Space Pilot 3000

Good news, everyone! The Talking Simpsons Patreon has started its newest miniseries, and this time around, we'll be looking at all 13 episodes of Futurama's first season. For our inaugural episode, we dig into the pilot (aptly named "Space Pilot 3000") as well as every detail we could possibly find about Futurama's production! If you dig our clip-and-reference-heavy take on The Simpsons, you'll definitely find a lot to love with our same treatment of Futurama. So jump into the nearest probulator, crank up the volume, and get ready for Henry, Bob, and Chris to introduce you to THE WORLD OF TOMORROW!

Sorry Henry but your "Continuity Error" call out is incorrect. You said that Bender's "I can stop drinking anytime I want" is an error because Gender runs off alcohol; however, in the ninth episode "Hell is Other Robots," Bender attempts to swear off alcohol and drinks oil instead. Also seeing how we have Bender saying he can stop in this episode, and the oil in the ninth episode, it would be safe to say this was something they chose to outright ignore in future seasons to play off the alcohol-only fuel idea instead.

Man, this was great fun. 1) Thanks for introducing me to Pierre Henry's "Psyche Rock", I had never realized it was a swipe. Gonna have to look into more of his stuff. 2) I really like the chiptune version of the calypso song from "How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back" (probably the best of the series' too-few songs and one of my favorite episodes) you're using for your fake ad breaks.

To this day, whenever someone loses something and immediately finds it (like "Where's the remote-- oh here it is.") I find myself saying "And that solves the mystery of the missing _______."

Very happy to hear Chris on this!

Here's a fun story: this episode shares the same date as my sister's birthday and the Simpsons episode Maximum Homerdrive. The day this episode aired, I was so excited for the new series from Matt Groening, I dragged my mom out to Target to look for Futurama stuff, but there wasn't any merch when the series premiered, to my great disappointment. It took me until 2003 to find actual toys of Fry, Leela, and Bender, pose-able figures with their own accessories, and a model of the Planet Express Ship.

Henry's comment on looking for episodes in file sharing programs and getting confused by some episode names really resonated with me. When I was in colle,ge so many of the Futurama I watched was downloaded from KaZaA/eMule/Limewire/etc... and it was sometimes VERY hard to get the episodes I was looking for. Most notably, I was not familiar with "mob movie" terminology, so I would see the episode titled "Bender Gets Made," but then be upset that it was the "Bender joins the Robot Mafia" episode EVERY.FREAKIN'.TIME. I was convinced, CONVINCED, that there was a REAL "Bender Gets Made" episode where we would see the origins of Bender literally getting made, and that all the ones I got were just mis-labeled.

Havin' hell of nostalgia listening to this. The first Fox run is so incredibly perfect! In that brief time it was actually cancelled I ranked it as better than The Simpsons if only because they actually went out on top but then they had to come back and spoil it. Anyway between this and What a Cartoon I couldn't put off subscribing anymore, you guys are doin' one hell of a job!

Also a new patron :) Futurama is one of my favourite shows of all time and I look forward to hearing the discussions about each episode :)

Futurama is a really important show to me. As a younger man I went away to college and burnt out after a few years. Being too short sighted and stubborn to drop out and figure out what I was doing with my life, I spiraled into depression and had a hard time getting out of bed some mornings, let alone focus on school. As my academic life became more and more bleak I turned to things that gave me some joy and focused on them to distract myself from my dark thoughts. One of those things were the DVDs of Futurama. I would spend many sleepless nights watching the episodes and listening to the commentaries because the voices of happy people sitting together to watch a cartoon show and talk about it made me feel like I was part of a group and I could laugh along and forget about my issues for a little while. I wouldn't go so far as to say Futurama and the commentaries saved my life but they helped me a lot when I was in a really bad place and I will be forever grateful towards the show because of that.

Great episode, but we need to find a good death jingle for this show. I doubt there's anything as perfect as Grandpa Simpson's rant, but surely Professor Farnsworth has a few good lines that could work. Maybe "With my final breath I curse Zoidberg!" Or "Gone the way of the poodle, and your primitive notions of modesty"

I'm still waiting for Matt to start up Young Homer.

So excited and thank you for doing this shows first season. I think this is a great idea, do the first season of a show. So much of a shows identity, if written properly, really shines in the beginning.

Hooray, Chris is on! I knew he was excited for you guys to do this show so I'm glad for him he was able to be a part of it. I'm going to stick up for the Billy West Fry voice here. While I agree the Fry voice from later episodes is better (as is Bender's), I like here that this Fry sounds pretty depressed and kind of dead inside. His transportation to the future reinvigorates him and gives him a new appreciation for life and he sounds more upbeat from then on, even though he's still a loser but at least he's a loser with some sense of purpose.

plot twist: Leela was fry's mom this whole time,

All the banks by me on the east coast use them too. Idk how else you'd do the drive thru banking

While I was in grad school I had to design my own mechanism for testing a perceptual phenomenon, for which I actuslly used different lengths of wire. I'd keep them in a drawer in the lab. When I had test subjects or my colleagues in the lab and they saw my mechanism I would always go let me show you the assorted lengths of wire I used to build it. Very few people got the joke.

Speaking of pneumatic tubes, the supermarket company I work for in the UK uses them for cashiers to send notes (bills) to the cash office at the end of their shift.

You guys sent me on memory lane of my watching this series, first episode I ever saw was the one where Fry eats the egg salad, (watching it while waiting for Simpsons of course), I didn’t watch it regularly until Adult Swim (ps: was adult swim first on TBS?) and I got the first volume dvd early summer 2005, I remember because that night I also got a LEGO set from Revenge of the Sith. I’d eventually get all the other seasons from the original Fox run.

This launches the morning after I started a Futurama run! So blessed, thanks guys!

I am so happy. Unlike the Simpsons, I watched Futurama from day one, which I guess is the reason why I have such an emotional bond with this show. Also, while there are a few Futurama podcasts around, none quite does it justice; I've secretly been hoping you guys started this podcast since I came across Talking Simpsons, and I hope this is not going to be the only season you'll cover!
