I was definitely not expecting this lmao While most people know that Dragonball brought anime and especially shonen to the west in a more mainstream capacity (like sailor moon did for shoujo), Akira and the original Ghost in the shell did the same for seinen, or adult animation. It was the first time many westerners expanded their worldview, and saw that animation could also be a vessel for more mature storytelling. It really paved the way for some of the modern greats, such as Cowboy bebop, Vinland Saga, and Berserk. Akira in particular also is of course responsible for the titular Akira slide sequence, which has been referenced across damn near every medium and influenced several generations of artists for going on half a century now. Of course, it also had very fluid and dynamic animation for the time as well, though I should think pretty much everyone who looked at it picked up on that haha I look forward to rewatching this with you guys. A tried and true classic, and one that not only holds up against the onslaught of time, but in fact gets more relevant and impactful as time goes on. Definitely mandatory viewing for any fan of animation in any form PS While this film is a classic, as I had said, it is also a deeply fragmented and chopped down version of the source material, which is why it can feel stilted and rushed in some places. There is a lot more to this story, but in order to get the fuller picture, you would have to read the manga/graphic novels
