And Gaara was fighting under disadvantageous conditions. He had to protect the village and couldn't make use of 100% of his Jinchuriki powers. And let's not act like Deidara is just some random ninja. The guy is in the same gang as Itachi and Orochimaru (formerly). Orochimaru killed two Kages and Itachi casually infiltrated the Leaf traumatized multiple elite level Jonin, tussled with Jiraya and left without getting TOUCHED. If Deidara is on the level of these hitters we really shouldn't be surprised that he beat a Kage. He probably would have beat Tsunade too.

They had to team up with the Sound to even try the Leaf, and when they got beat and found out Orochimaru tricked them, they immediately surrendered. They have no Kakashi, Guy, Hyuuga, InoShikaCho or any real hitters. Their best players are Gaara, Kankuro, and Temari. They have no real chance against one of the Akatsuki. And they’d be totally cooked if 2 Akatsuki came to fight.
