The daimyo all crashing out to make sure Yamato will make it to this battle 20 years later is great too, and that last sequence is so killer. Awesome reaction and discussion as always y'all!

2024-08-14 04:34:04 +0000 UTCThis is it. This is the ep I’ve been waiting for. I see a lot of folks pass this over when the conversation of Wano’s greatest eps comes up. Which honestly, I understand, since… well, everything that’s coming lol. But for me, this is the one that I’ve watched and rewatched more times than I can count, and it speaks to something that One Piece exemplifies magnificently. Emotional impact. It’s the reason people would try to show me clips and fights from the show for twenty years to try and get me to watch it, and it’s the reason none of those things ever took. I didn’t have context. These moments, when Yamato reads about Roger laughing, and sees him in Luffy vicariously through Oden, when the Daimyos were his first found family, showing him far more kindness than his own father, moving him to the point of tears, to the point where a new core memory is formed, these are the things which serve as the catalyst to the adrenaline that the smash cuts feed into, when you see the inner turmoil of this clash of titans, not just some furry with a club and a colossal beast like it looks to someone who hasn’t seen the show, but the climactic peak of decades of abuse and manipulation between a father and his son. It’s something Oda’s story excels at doing time and time again, but this is definitely my favorite iteration of it. It never ceases to get me even after the hundredth time haha
