I really do like how this episode showed why Choji is necessary to the team.

I remember Kakashi did something similar during the bell test, so I figured maybe it was like a part one mistake. Something like Naruto learned/copied based on what he saw kakashi do.

As for this situation the opponent Jirobo has essentially a dome of earth surrounding them that heals using chakra while also absorbing those whose trapped inside. So Naruto couldn’t break it at his current energy.
