Heat, you touched here on one of my favorite motifs of this story, and something I’ve had conversations with others about before. One of the biggest complaints people tend to voice about Kishimoto’s narrative structure (apart from his weak female characters) is how basically the entire story is just about Naruto and Sasuke, and everyone else takes a backseat, unlike Oda’s characters, who essentially all have autonomy across the world. This is true to an extent, in that Naruto and Sasuke are clearly the main characters, so the central storylines (the akatsuki and the uchiha) revolve around their motivations. However, in truth, the real major driving motif behind the narrative is the way naruto affects the people around him. Yes, he takes center stage constantly repeating himself with lines like DATTEBAYO! And “that’s my Nindo,” not to mention the Talk no Jutsu, but he does these things to serve as a framing device more to other people’s character arcs than his own. Not that that is totally absent or anything, hell, we just saw in this very episode how, despite being developmentally disabled, he’s able to master an S rank jutsu nobody other than the 4th and Jiraiya ever have in a week. But in truth, he more serves as the catalyst to Tsunade’s arc. And Gaara’s. And Hinata’s. And rock Lee’s, and Jiraiya’s, and perhaps most of all, Sasuke’s. This is a theme which will continue for the next 600 chapters, and it’s something I think the title of the story belies when people say shit like they don’t like him as an MC. Even if that is true, the story isn’t really about him as a character in a vacuum. It’s about the way his personality, and ideals, and unwavering resolve affect those he meets in his lifetime, and how their stories change for the better. That to me has always been one of the major bulletpoints of Kishimoto’s narrative style, and something that synergizes quite well with his world building too, although we haven’t really seen a whole lot of that yet tbf
