Since the family name is the first name and given name comes second, it's even common (for boys/men especially) to call friends by their family name (since that's technically the first name). Like, you'd almost only call literally life long childhood friends by their given name. A high schooler would call another high school friend just by their family name. Like, if your name was John Buchanan, it would be Buchanan John in Japanese and friends would just call you Buchanan (whereas strangers would call you Buchanan-san) Only other times (other than childhood friends) given names are used would be in romantic relationships or from a superior (as in, if you have a very good long lasting relationship with your boss, they'd call you "John-kun") or between girls/women who are friends
