It makes a nice refresher for the things I haven't seen or read in a few years. Since I already know how things go in general, it makes for a fun "highlights reel" that gets even more interesting when they point out things that I missed the first time and when they go through their analysis of the episode. The meta reason for the flashback is probably mostly to eat up time because things have been seriously dragging since Fishman Island. But, recontextualizing the flashbacks from Rebecca's POV where she puts together that the toy who was watching over her was actually her father kinda hit honestly.
