This of course isint to say that smoker would have trained differently given a different fruit ability of course. Also don't forget he has a special baton that cancels out devil fruit powers as well.

Smoker was a captain already at Loguetown, he might have been a captain for quite some time and was getting ready for a promotion to something higher. These guys might be people who recently made captain plus some more experienced guys like the rust dude. And our guys have come a long way since Loguetown. Combine that and you get easy wins against captain class enemies.
