Conformity is considered socially responsible, and individuality is repressed, especially in educational institutions, where it’s believed that things like expressiveness and bright colors aren’t conducive to learning. As a result, every school has uniforms, you don’t wear what you want, and they almost all have strict dress codes about hair color, too. In fact, it’s so egregious that they will often even force people with other natural hair colors to dye their hair black in order to conform with all the other Asian students. So the gangs and counterculture scenes dyed their hair Bc it wasn’t allowed, in a show of rebellion and badassery. This may also have been why Kuwabara’s hair was red, even though his sister’s wasn’t
