I know the author likes to makes references to other animes/mangas that inspired her, so I feel like that could be an homage to that scene of Shinichi vs Mr A.

If that is true, then being able to touch souls is his own power I got hxh vibes too. The music when junpei(rip) was crying sounded similar to the climax of the gon&pitou scene.
